Here in Newcastle it's not often you see a old Holden, or Ford on the road. It's a breath of fresh air though in at the Foreshore when a nice old Monaro, Kingswood, Falcon etc shows up among all the riced out crapboxes, later model 6 cylinder Commodores/Falcons etc.

I find it really rare to see a Torana on the road these days. As people have said, wait till Summer and then people start taking them out for a drive.

also, adelaide is the home of holden.. so its not really suprising they're more popular in general here. I still drive my '79 P6 daily, although most people don't even recognize it as a ford (the only reference to ford is the 'LTD by Ford' cursive badge at the back, no blue oval).

My 66 GT Cortina & 77 5.8 Falcon coupe get seen by me every day as I walk past them to leave the house. I then drive either the Laser or AU to work or where ever I'm off to. There is a few oldies both Ford & Holden used as daily drivers here on the Gold Coast, with many more getting out for a cruise on the week ends.

Can be a case of a couple of things:
1. They are just not in your area. On the Fairlane appreciation thead, it was once discussed on the colours on NA/NC 'lanes. I myself have always wondered, why there are so many emerald green, & silver ones up here in QLD, but almost no cobalt blue ones like mine. Turns out that the emerald green ones are a bit thin on the ground in VIC if I remember. Guess it could be the same. 2. Any car beyond 20yrs old is generally considered a classic (some people may argue 30) & they start to be snapped up eagerly, or as said before, rust starts to kill them. So= less. 3. If you have one of these (also mentioned previously) you wont use it as a daily driver. 4. Holden parts are generally a bit more abundant, & therefore more affordable. 5. Does it matter? The more there are put away, the more that survive....

I travel around country Victoria for work and the most common old car i see are Holden HQ-WB variants.
There are still a lot of pre-90's cars out there used as daily drivers. Just this morning coming home @ 2.30am i saw a HQ 2 door Monaro on South rd Moorabbin. |

I did see an old XB (I think) something today... It looked like an XB crewman of sorts! Never seen anything like it before! I assume its actually a wagon that had the rear removed and a tray attached! It looked very very very well done!
But I see alot more old Falcons down my way! Hardly any old Holdens... must have something to do with all the ships off Newcastle beach... anchers away! Classic LTD!!!

I havent read past the original question but still,
I see a hell of alot more old fords than holdens around here. especially the restored ones. Every day i would see at least 2 XC or older. And thats just by driving through a country town.

I think one thing that hasnt been mentioned regarding older cars in general is their poor economy and most cant run on fairy fuel
The bloke i bought my XC Fairmont off drove it everyday But the cost of fuel was killing him (pensioner) He up graded to a VT commondore Cheaper to run, cheaper on rego , more comfortable and probably more power ??? Then the other issue as mentioned most older models are getting used for donor cars Even the injected V8 commondores are getting thin for this reason Parts are out wieghing the cars value |

i drive my clevo zj everyday
not that i see a lot of toher stuff aound though, like a few people have said hz era stuff and utes are still quite common... that being said, i pulled up next to a zh yesterday in penrith, and still see a few 70s model fords, but not much pre xy stuff... it is a lot rarer to see a fairlane than a falcon though as someone mentioned before, as they were mostly attacked and scrapped... every other zj ive looked at has been rubbish...

As Ryan mentioned, there sweet f/a up in Newcastle.
The X series Falcons (say between XR to XC) are becoming too expensive to buy than the Holden counterparts and are usually riddled with tons of rust. The XW/XY Falcons and XA-XC coupes are a good example as few are for sale and the ones that are generally need a lot of expensive and time consuming repairs. A lot of people seem to hold on to them for years, parked outside with the intention to rebuild but 5 years later they lose interest. By then the cars rotted and rare bits are missing. The XD - XF's are still farily obtainable cheaply, but again rusty. The oldest I see up here on a regular basis are the EB/EF/EL's. |
