euro sedan under $45000

what euro cars would be available to me in this price range? i would like it to be 2006 or newer but to be honest i have no idea what sort of options i have. it needs to have style and a little power, im coming out of a BAXR8. i would like it to have around the same power as the xr8. i will more than likely head to the auctions for this one as its allot cheaper in doing so. cheers for the reply's.

From left field - not a sedan but a hatch of the same dimensions. Brand new 2010 plates, both with far less power but a nice chunk of torque and more features than a 3 year old S-Class...

E39 M5, 1999 onwards. A bit older than what you want but they are so ahead of their time they fell as modern as a VE.

You can get E60 BMWs from 29k onwards. The 'M-sport' 530i would be my pick or as above the E39 M5 is a great bit of car.

Be very careful with 20 year old euros, bits are expensive and rare.

Also make sure whatever you buy can be worked on where you live by more than one workshop.

I bought an RX7 back in 1985 and had to travel 350km to get anyone to work on it.

Even a mate of mine that is a VW salesman warns me off secondhand VWs as spares can be totally ridiculous. Check out the Touareg for an example, 125k car can now be had for 40k and generally a dealer won't touch them.

I guess you have your reasons for wanting a Euro - but living where you do I would seriously advise against it for a couple of reasons. The first is servicing and parts availability in anywhere except major city areas. They really can be very VERY expensive cars just for normal servicing let alone if something seriously goes wrong. Motors, gearboxes, but mainly the electronics are a huge concern. The other reason is that the trim in a lot of Euros does not handle north Qld heat and humidity very well. Have a look at some in your local area that have lived up there for a while and you'll see what I mean.

And then you say you want something with the kind of power of your XR8. You will be disappointed with anything less than an E39 M5.

Nah mate seriously, stick with your XR8 - or trade up to a T-Series.

20 year old euro? A E39 is only 10 years old. That would probably be my pick if I wanted something sporty. Another plus is they tend to hold their value well.

SAAB Aero. I know I will get flamed by people but we love ours.
We have had a Bilstein strut & spring package, Abbott exhaust & chip, air intake & better brake lines fitted.
Its very quick, quiet, very safe, cheap to maintain ( you MUST take it to a specialist or you will get ripped), and parts are much cheaper than any of the other Euro brands.
Have a look at SAAB Central which is a UK based forum & you will learn a lot. They have a huge following in the US and the UK and the parts back up is fantastic. I have bought parts online for 1/2 the price landed of the local SAAB dealer. They have the same oil filter as a Camry!
I would get an 04-06 Aero, spend some $ on a few little bits, service it well and enjoy.
I love Fords but my parents have a new Mondeo top of the range thing and our 8 year old Aero is SO MUCH quieter, more stable, handles better, better auto gear change, more powah, and looks more "refined".
But the Mondeo has better around city economy.

If I had to do some KMs I would jump in the SAAB any day and the best part,... its a little different.

Depends who is going t o work on it
4 or 5 year old 2.5 2.8 or 3 litre bimmer , all you need is an odbII cable the software and a lappy to read the codes the rest is just like a jap car , you could look at 6 year old jags but you need to be near an experienced mechanic , I maintain my personal e46 with no problems and nothing corners like a modified bimmer

maybe a used VW R36, if I recall 0-100 from the 3.6 is roughly the same as the XR8.... and looks great to boot!

Has all the goodies and does go very well too.
I don t think you will miss the XR8 with this.
Mid 6 second 0-100 and 14.5 quarters.
Had one for 2 years . Great on fuel as well. 400 to 500 kms per tank on my driving.
Just got make sure it has the full service history.

Bloody hell, and people complain about Ford depreciation. a 2002 7 series at $35k...theres a good reason for that.

Ok I dont know about age wise, but I dont think you can go past a E36 M3. DONT get SMG and leave $10k in the bank for when something happens, if it happens. Awesome car and you should be about to get a good one for $25k

I would be talking to a Skoda dealer about a new Superb with a budget like that, I have seen some incredible deals on brand new Skodas which I guess will happen as the brand establishes itself.

Im going to reiterate the part prices on these Euros, some of them are eye-wateringly expensive and labour costs seem to be automatically jump as soon as it has a Euro badge.

I remember driving a new rental VY Calais and then driving a new BMW 330CI back -to-back several years back and being shocked at how the BMW wasnt that much better than the Holden to drive or to sit in. In the end these Euros are still made out of metal and plastic like any other car and any purchase is probably made more by the heart than the head. They make more sence second-hand as the high maintenance and parts costs have driven down the price of the car.

I paid half of what your saying your budget is, brand new out the door. So far I have piled 35,000km on it, and servicing so far has cost less than Ford charge for Mondeo or even Falcon scheduled servicing.

Its not really fair to claim that a Euro brand instantly equals expensive.

Just like with any brand of car, you have to shop around for parts and after sales service, because for ever 10 dealers or suppliers that will bend you over, there is one who is more than happy to come to the table with very reasonable service and prices.

Its very important though, to remember what sort of car it is, and the age and commonality of the technology it is packing.

If I had 45k to play with though........ a 5.0l V8 M5 would be seriously hard to walk past.
