about 2 months ago i was almost convinced on buying a VE SS. It had the right price, v8 and i didnt mind the looks. Hell it even drove around town pretty good.
Awesome yeah? Then push came to shove and i got to take one for a spin with a bit more enthusiastic use of the steering wheel (which dosnt feel right to me for some reason?). Pretty much put, when these things have to move, their size becomes known and they feel like a much larger (and dated) car. Drove an fg XR8 straight after, and if i still manage to find one for a good price i would part money for a used fg xr8 than a new ss. And thats regardless of brand loyalty at this point. If the SS was a better car, the red camps ranks would be swelling. The price may be good, but the product feels way more dated than the FG in terms of driving experience. So seeing them at this price is no big surprise when they are trying to sell what is essentially an old car with an updated bumper, circle air con vents and a new touch screen. The SS is big, it feels big and even tastes big! (okay not really). Im almost convinced that the only reason why there are so many SS's on the road today is simply because they come in as a povo pack that Ford couldnt compete with.

The SS is cheaper to make than the SV6, the problem is its a real bait and switch deal, it is very hard to find a manual sedan non-Z series. Most people will walk out the dealer with 50 grand auto Z series. Even more for the popular Sportwagon.
The real Aussie car bargain is Ecoboost Falcon for 30 grand that dealers are doing, it's this cheap even though it is low volume and has an expensive European made, turbocharged and direct-injected engine. Zetec Ecoboost Mondeos are going for base model Camry prices - if they advertised these prices to the wider world people will be knocking down Ford's door. As much as the Holden's SS sale price is misleading, it at least gets people thinking about buying. |

The V8 Commodores are probably the most sensible vehicle Holden produces from a business-plan point of view - big sales, big exports oppurtunities, big image-building, big profits and little competition. They just need to bring out the VF pronto. |

Are Holden still doing this 0.5% finance deal or whatever it was? If so, combined with this special, its a pretty hard bargain to ignore. Add on their Vapour Injected LPG from factory and you have a sweet V8 for cheap running costs and minimal power loss. Hmm lets see how i go in the lotto draw this weekend haha.

For those worrying about LS2 fuel consumption - I hired a MY12 Caprice this year, drove it like I stole it, and returned 17L/100klms. If i were in a Windsor with 100kw less I would have returned 25L+.

Yeh fair enough; I was looking at the WA market which tends to be a bit more expensive than other states. Still, i would haggle!! Some good deals around!

I'm looking at buying a ute;
I either buy a SS Thunder UTE for 40K drive away or Buy a FPV GS Ute for 57K drive away. 17K to keep another ford in the garage, its a hard sell to the Mrs!

Eagleheart, the conditions in which I was driving (mountain pass) and with the gusto I did it, If i were in an EFI windsor with ~170kw (rather than 270 of the LS2) I would have returned 25L/100klms, not the surprisingly good 17L/100klms that I did do.

I know the FPV 8 costs more but lets face it it is vastly superior instead of drillig it out and putting bigger slugs in it like holden do ford are using technology to build a smaller high tech engine,
lets look at the figures holden 6.0L 260kW @ 5600rpm 517Nm @ 4400rpm ford XR6 turbo 4.0L 270kW @ 5250rpm 533Nm @ 2000rpm - 4750rpm FPV F6 4.0L T 310kW @ 5500rpm 565Nm @ 1950-5200rpm FPV GS 5.0L SC 315 kW @5750 rpm and 545 N·m @ 2000 - 5500 rpm FPV GT 5.0L SC 335 kW @ 5750 - 6000 rpm and 570 N·m @ 2200 - 5500 rpm I konw there are more $ involved but even both 6 cyl options are more powerful and have better torque curves

Ford should make a cheaper xr8 to compete with the ss arguement again. And if they did we would have probably 10 forum members here that will buy one! those sought of sale figures (10) won't help Ford. As it has been previously mentioned before. If you want a slow, fuel sucking cheap v8, go buy the Holden for all the noise and no action. if you want cheap performance, buy the ford turbo 6. if you want the noise and the performance, buy the GS, but please do a bit of haggling, who knows you may get it for the same price as a SS;) |

But as a daily ute, the Holden is a much better setup, IRS, bigger and better cabin (storage pockets are great), the one piece body looks the good in my opinion and I think overall the VE ute looks better than the FG. BF FPV's are my favorite. Also the kit available with the SSV was too hard to say no to when compared to the GS... and in all honestly the 6L is a good motor when it's a daily and your not chasing cheap power.

Hmmmm.
I love how some people consider 10-17k not a deciding factor... For the rest of us normal middle class citizens, 10-17k makes one hell (well actually 10-17) reason of a difference! But hey, all hail FORD - the ones that never get it wrong.

I'm not saying it's not a factor but I for one would rather a low K used F6 or GS that an underpowered (for it's size) thirsty 6.0L
