As the title says, my XR8 in the last few days has developed a weird squeak sound at times, and when it happens the motor runs REALLY rough, and it has almost not power and at times will grind to a halt, and then stalls.
I can restart and drive off and its fine. But it is getting more frequent, I tried to capture some on my phone tonight, as it was quite bad. In this clip I am on the hwy and its struggling to stay at 80kph http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vFQpSkR-C7Q In this one it comes on worse and its quite shakey and struggles to stay at speed, I put foot down about 75% and it struggles a bit, then lets go and takes off. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EsXKZg-F5YU ANy ideas at all? When the squeak happens, not of the accessories lock up, like I initially thoughts, coming more from the coils?

Might be the cam synchroniser , it's sits under the coil packs replacing the dizzy. They are known to start squeaking, hope this helps.

found in other threads about rockauto.com, the unit Dorman 689-101 is like $30. Have emailed them about postage.

Then this. Even with postage (which is only about $15-20 IIRC) you are still way in front of what you can get it for here. That is if you can wait for it to arrive.

I bought a doorman unit from the US. Haven't fitted it yet. Doesn't appear to have any bearings or seal to stop oil coming up the shaft? Has a fair amount of play in it too.
Google "Doorman synchroniser review" What's the original like? I've never removed mine (though, it needs replacing). Does the original have play, does it have bearings? |

got email from rockauto, postage is $60, but still way cheaper than buying here.
The guy from Rockauto wrote to me and said "I do not see this part listed as fitting your vehicle so I am unable to confirm the part would work for your application". Can someone confirm this is the right part?

$60 seems a lot for postage. You should be able to just do a postage calculator on their website.
It won't show up for au xr8, but it is the same as the 5.0 explorer. p/n 689 101 I paid $30 for the unit and $40 for shipping last year. Some people have had issues with the Dorman, mines done 5000+kms and havent had oil leaking issues. Haven't pulled it out to check the pins though.

This is one advertised on ebay...Same part number and same brand. Take a look at that price, Crazy! Buying from the US is the way to go.
