I see NSW is now introducing digital drivers licences and this has got me wondering about how they actually work, as I am anal about my privacy and would not like handing an unlocked smartphone over to anyone so they can check my details.
So, has anyone had any first hand experience as to how they work in real life? Is it like a plastic licence where say a policeman takes it back to his car to check? if the app is open, can other apps/information also be accessed? I do not have a NSW licence other wise I would get one and find out first hand.

I doubt if 'everyone' will have such a licence.
I will insist on a plastic card, simply because my smartphone is for phone calls and texts only. No apps, no wifi, no faceplant, no google, no extraneous connectivity. No need for any of that. Yep, I'm a dinosaur. |

SA is close to this as well, you can actually get the app etc now but not sure its actually useful yet.
I dont mind the idea and it has lots of features that make it looks quite secure. In the case of showing your licence it has a QR code thats unique every 30 seconds or so which can be scanned by anyone else with the app and will verify if its genuine or not. No need to hand your phone over, just let the cop or security (eg venue access) look at it and/or scan the code. Also has features like touch the licence and it flashes up a security watermark to prevent people trying to use screenshots etc. Ill be glad to no longer have to carry a licence, combined with apple pay etc will soon mean no more damn wallet to carry around.

This will go over so well with the senior members of our community, my dad has never had a mobile phone he still refuses to have a credit card.

Don't lose your phone people... What happens if your phone gets lost or stolen, or heaven forbid it gets driven over (guilty)? You get pulled over and... Sorry officer, I don't have it on me...

This has already happened with health care and pensions cards. You can download the myGov app and link it to Centrelink and you can bring up your current card. It actually works really well, it's exactly the same as the physical card except it's online. You still get a physical copy but you also have one online.
Everything these days is being geared towards smart phones, you can make payments on your phone from your. Any account, you have access to security systems, bank accounts etc, so it's only logical it's all going the same way. |

You need to have a physical licence for photo ID for many things as well as driving. You have to show photo ID to pick up a parcel from the post office. I suppose we will have to start carrying our passports instead.

It's nice that they're giving people the option to have both an online licence and a physical licence. I think I'll stick with the physical one though. I don't have much interest in smart phones.

you will eventually be able to use the digital licence and it will be more secure being they can actually verify its genuine.

Not like you can have a paper licence when they changed to a card with a picture. |

The switch from paper to card meant that you could still put it in your wallet, or purse. I can't think of any rules, at the moment, which states that you must have a fully operational smart phone on your person at all times. All very theoretical at the present, though. |

Some people on here have obviously never lost a wallet full of their credit cards and licenses and cash...... At least with a digital system you have back ups and the ability to erase immediately if something went wrong or went missing. Bring it on.... the less cr@p I have to carry around and misplace the better.

A lot quicker to flash your card than have to frig round with your phone, and the card doesn't break if you drop it!

I don't think digital licence will replace the current one we use but will be an addition for those who use smart phones for payments, passes etc which we all know the younger generation is keenly endorsing with the new digital age we live in, personally I don't see any issues since it is an option to use.
For those who complaining of privacy laws well all I got to say Govco & large Corporate business know more about you than what you know about yourself. Cheers |

Is this BS even necessary?? Why do we even NEED to carry a licence?
Cop pulls you over, you ID yourself and they look at the picture of you they have on file. I don't see the point when everything is computerised and so much instant data is now accessible to the people who need it.

I have been pulled over a couple of times with no license on me.
But I quote my license number and the cop looks it up... After explaining how I memorised the number...no problems. I have it memorised as it is used in the Taxi login system. |

If the changes mean money is saved in paper/personnel, etc to administer it, you can pretty much guess which way it will go.
Technology and change is good, but the money factor always comes in the top spot as the main consideration, so I'm not telling everyone anything they don't know already. |

Its just a matter of time, no smart phone needed, it is all linked to the microchip, embedded under your skin..Licence, credit card, ID, Tax file number, Citizenship detail. Imagine telling someone 50 years ago that money is just a number on your screen, no cash.. |

Well, that what I thought... From what I understand, No RMS can provide a licence on the plastic card any more. It's all done from the 1 machine and they send it out in the post. Think of the money that's saved. While you are waiting they give you a slip of paper stating your licence number and the fact you are awaiting the card. I guess it makes sense, but The only discount I have seen with this money saver is the 'good behaviour' 50% discount you get upon renewal (in NSW).
