Default Pis.sed Off email time!

Right well, went to uni today, and low and behold I copped a parking ticket. Now before I rant on, yes I knew that I was in the wrong zone, BUT it was pouring down with rain and the wind was high too.

Is Deakin in geelong the only place to charge uni students for parking? Just a rumour I heard.

This is absolute crap, I mean they do provide a free car park, but its up the top of a bloody hill, and is a good 10 min walk at a minimum from class. Now as it was raining I was not really keen to have a stroll in a shower.

So I parked in a permit zone that was atleast half empty anyway. From memory its $120 per year for a permit, or you pay $3.30 per day. Now Im full time, which means min I will be at uni 4 times a week, so $12 per week on parking.

What is our general servcie fee for? And what about thr $5k a year I pay in uni fees? And then we get slapped with $400 worth of just text books every semester aswell!!

And we are in Geelong, not bloody melbourne, if it ws melbourne fine, parking is a bugger, but out here, where the ONLY people who park there are students and teachers.

And then add ontop that alot of the students going to Geelong dont live there, or rent around the place so 90% of us are working casual jobs to keep on going aswell.

Know I know its only $63 bucks, but seriously, dont we pay enough as it is for the "privledge" of being there in the first place. Im sure the uni has its bills to pay but they must get enough from other sources.

So yeah, Im not happy, and before I shoot an email off I want to know if other uni's charge for parking at there hell-hole?

/rant

Thanks :

Oh and this is in Warun Ponds (middle of nowhere) by the way, NOT in Deakin in town or at the waterfront!

Every uni I know of you pay for parking.

Swinburne Hawthorn, Swinburne Pharan, Monash Clayton, Monash Caulfield, Melbourne Uni, etc...

I'd suggest it is the norm to get charged for parking.

Flinders Uni is on top of a big *** hill. I don't know what the parking fee's are now, but they were exorbidant a few years ago.
There is no free parking at all, and becasue some genuis build the uni oon top of that big *** hill, there's no room for extra carparks (UNISA at the levels is on the flat so they just bulldoze out parking). 99% of the time, if I got there after 8.45, there were no parks in the 3 carparks either side of engineering and I'd end up on the other side of the campus...well, not really but you get my point.

Pay for your parking and get a HECS reduction maybe?????

I was at a private college and they fine for improper parking too. I think everyones jumped on the bandwagon and got their little can of paint out and made chargable parking spaces. What a ИИИИ off.

Im at swinburne Lilydale and there and hundreds of free parking spots. If you cant park up the top you park down the bottom (which causes abit of a walk)

It's the same anywhere ... you get charged for parking ... or you get fined for it.
But I don't go to uni ... so i voted No in the poll.

But when it coems for city parking ... and having to do deliveries .... there are less and less Loading Zones now ... and soon they are looking into charging delivery drivers a fee to parking in loading docks too .... which is a bloody disgrace as it is ... in the end we will end up doing the job for nothing as we will be slugged with more fees and increased tolls, etc.

as I said before, paying the parking isn't the issue, its more the principle that we shouldn't have to in the first place.

and what has this got to do with your driveway? Deakin is in the middle of nowhere, its not stopping someone parking for their house or work.
:

I obviously can afford a car, I own one...lol

Oh I know the carpark your talking about. I was the first one into it at AFD. It would have been quicker to park at bunnings down the road and walk hahaha.

Pay the ticket and keep an umbrella in your car

Not the only uni.. At Adelaide uni they dont provide any parking unless you have a disability/work for the uni so you have to park on the street.... where you struggle to find a park... pay at least $5 for parking a day AND have to walk...

General service fees - ask the student union. $5k in uni fees is merely a contribution - providing your education costs about 3-4 times the HECS payment and unless you pay upfront, its all deferred (lol, only $15k left to pay off my HECS!!). $400 of textbooks... yes i remember that sucked big time being a student... but i fail to see what that has to do with parking... you can do without the texts, its tought, but its possible.

Quote:

Well the commonwealth is actually significantly out of pocket paying for the "privelege" of you attending - evan after all the expenses incurred by yourself. Now if you were being charged for the full costs of your education like an international student, THEN you would have something to complain about (approx $15 - $20k pa)

They should also be responsible for paying for you to park there?

I think you should just calm down... have a beer.... consider the fact you are attending a great university in a great city in an amazing country... realise its not all that bad.... and if it still bothers you that much, catch a bus to uni*. This really does reek of misplaced priorities. Sorry if that sounds harsh - i dont mean to be rude but you are doing something not everyone has the opportunity to do.

*insert excuses for not using public transport here.

Griffith, UQ and alot of the QUt's charge for permits here so it's not your uni

We are going back a while now but when I was at UQ there was an issue with the fees for student parking but that was quashed when a young lass was raped and the uni spent big dollars on lighting and 24/7 campus security

I'm currently at La Trobe and we don't really have it good either. Last year the parking permit cost about $70. So they thought this year it would be a swell idea to bump it upto $120.

Its all run by bureaucrats, they couldn't give a crap about us unfortunately.

By the way, Deakin at burwood, the parking costs about $170 last time I heard. But that is only for one semester. So in one sence I do actually have it better.

Flinders is now $110 a year, there was one free park for the first 2 weeks, not no more... they have added a 'new' car park up the back... dug out part of the curb and found a flatspot to fence of a few cars to park on the dirt...
$3.30 a day, 1st fine I had was $20 and I got it scrubbed, (I have a permit now). I'd love to check the legalities on University car parks, are they council enforced or uni enforced, if the latter is the case, surely you could get out of all parking tickets.

Okay, I would love to know where you get these figures and such from.... Not having a go, I am genuinely interested to see how and where these fee's are actually cut...
For my course specifically, there are ~52 students, paying aprox. $7k pa (very conservative) simple maths puts that at $350,000 a YEAR! How many average wages can be paid from that amount?
You come to subjects like Law where the fees I'm sure would be double that..... $700,000, where does all this money go? (Then you have the other thousand odd students...)
Uni fees are bullИИИИ. /end uneducated rant.
