Hi,
I recently found out that the government will pay $2000 towards a gas conversion (duel fuel) for a private use car. I've rung a couple of places and the cheapest so far for an AU series is $2750 drive in, drive out with a full tank of gas. Do you know of any places that do it cheaper than that for an AU? ... I'm quite interested... (especially if its only going to cost me $750...) also if there is anything to worry about with getting it done? Cheers Juz |

You'd be better off having a look in the LPG section of the forum - lots of info there. $2750 is what it cost to convert my V8 pre-rebate (but I had my own tank, so add $500 for a tank, I guess). It's not a bad price at all - what brand components will it be using? Mine is Landi-Renso and so far (1 year on) I am very happy with it, but lots of people use Parnell and Vialle (which is what Tickford used in factory dual fuel AUs, IIRC).

My dad converted his AU Fairmont to lpg at the beginning of this year for $1400 in Perth. The rebate came in and the prices went up.

Just got it done for $2500 and got the $2000 rebate. Last LPG fill $9, would have previously cost $38 !!!!

Except since the announcement of the LPG rebate, the government now plans to put excise ontop of LPG in a few years and increase it every year after for 5 years...

I suppose if you had a turbo falcon putting on LPG would mean new tuning and all?

They have been going to do that for years now (we are all still waiting for it to come in) ... will still make it much cheaper than petrol anyway.

There's no way in hell I'd be filling with petrol when I do an average for 1,500km a week. I'd be a povo for sure if i was running petrol. :Reverend:

My AU wagon is getting done in the next few weeks - Impco system for $2900. Same place also did my EF sedan for $2400. I'm told the only difference between the 2 is the donut tank required for the wagon, otherwise an AU sedan should be the same price as what I paid for the EF.

the only real thing to worry about is how far down the track will the head need attention ie: removing and setting up for gas. this can cost over $1500 including getting the head reconditioned, gaskets, head bolts plus removing and installing the head.
i've owned eb's and an ef but only on fuel...can someone tell me if u factor the extra cost into the gas conversion cost and then consider the cost to fill up gas over say 5 years, does it really end up much cheaper than fuel? by the way if anyone is in need of an au head already setup for gas i have one for sale. |

the diffrence in a EF to a AU is the filler UNLESS the AU is I.R.S. Then the tank brackets are diffrent. but the price is the same. the diffrence in a sedan to a wagon is in the donut tank and spare wheel carrier and cover.. it is about 350$ more diffrent. a EA-ED sedan is $2300 impco and a EF-AU sedan is $2400 impco and a Wagon will be now $2750 impco BA sedan is $2500 and a Wagon is $2800 impco.

hey jc and trick xd, maybe u guys should come and work with me for a week or two. i've pulled heads off EA through to AU, on average most would have between 150,000 and 250,000kms. when your the guy using the machines to cut the old inserts out, then fit and re-cut the new seats u realise pretty quick that factory inserts aint no well-tight inserts. i recon in the last 4 years i would have done an average of 2 per week, but don't dispare....BA is all the rage these days. The v8's have poor quality ex guides and so rapidly wear and the engine will burn oil, i do them under warranty for dealers. the 6 cylinders suffer from a bit of the same thing but another major thing is insert quality, yep soft factory inserts and valves that eventually burn out if used and abused on dedicated gas.
