Speak directly to the manager, even take your car and show them u have no k/n filter in it. Dont speak to the reatil person, go directly to the manager. Its a little scam someone in the store pulled to score a free K/N in a lame bid for it to go un-noticed OR it was a returned item and it was refunded without checking!!!! Happens all the time!!Please let us know the outcome, its not fair that your hard earned dollars go towards a crappy paper filter that you didnt want in the first place. So yeah keep us in the loop.

An ALL to often occurence, people go to the parts store, take the new filter, put their old one or another similar filter in the box, and take it back, usually when it's busy, so they get a refund, with out the goods being checked, so they end up with a bonus free filter, and the parts store is screwed,! and in your case it just goes on down the line, !

I dont like your chances mate. Theres the argument that you are simply swapping your old stock one for the K&N one. If you are successful then whats stopping everyone from pulling a similar stunt. Good luck anyway mate

If they don't exchange it I'll just have to wear it. For you guys reading this, when buying a filter, open the box and check that your getting what your paying for before leaving the store.

This is really weird to me given that i work at Autobarn and I know how the system works there. I can guarantee you that if it has been swapped it has been done at the store - all stores get their K&N products from Autobarn Logistics based in Victoria, and the loads arrive at the store wrapped in packing to prevent this sort of thing. If the plastic is missing or has been opened we aren't allowed to accept the load.

Definitely take it back and explain it to them though because it may have been that its a display box and they put a filter in it to make it stand up on a shelf etc, I have done it before (but I dont sell them lol).

Hi All, I just wanted to say a big thumbs up to stockoau!!

I'm the member who bought it and while I was initially quite understandably angry when I opened the package, after discussing with Brendan he has refunded me within the hour!

He's a very genuine guy, who unfortunately has been screwed over.

I don't like your chances of getting a refund or exchange, but you can only try!

Best of luck mate.

Justin.

Are you sure it was in a sealed box, with the plastic wrap intact?

I bought it in Townsville, am in Mackay, and at present the filter is in Victoria. When I get it back I'll try and get it exchanged (won't try for a refund as I think that will be pushing my luck). But after buying it I recieved my shaker top, and theres no way I would I'd be able to use an AU panel filter with the set up I'm making. So either way I've wasted $100ish, I'll just have to check the K & N I get for my new set up before paying

Is it asking too much for b2tf to talk to his boss about an exchange? It could be shipped to him and done at his work.

I'm not sure what pull or rank he has in his store though!

Whatever the case, I hope it works out for you.

If it is possible, I may even be able to drop the filter off to b2tf depending on where he is - and then I can mail it back to you brendan?

I would do it but the problem is it needs to be done at the store it was bought from for 2 reasons, first one being so it doesnt screw up their sales setup (its all logged and re-orders what they sell etc), and secondly so they can investigate why and how the mixup happened.

I wouldn't ask B2TF to try and pull any strings, even if he could. As I've already said, even if I did receive the K & N filter, it would have been a waste of money as I will not be able to use it once I finish my new setup. If I do get an exchange on it I'm only going to sell it off cheap anyway, so not overly concerned either way.

Assuming the scam has been perpetrated through the store and not earlier in the food chain, they might have a record of anyone who has returned that item in recent months. I mean, whenever I return a good to a store - no matter what kind of shop it is - they will generally take a look at your driver's license and take details down. I wonder if they do it there? Short of that, they might like to crack open a few others and see if they are OK, too. As I said, the scam might have been perpetrated at a higher level than retail.

Which is partly why I ponder whether it wasn't done at a distribution level, or some other part of the "food chain" other than the store itself.

It wouldn't be hard to buy one, replace with paper filter and reseal. We use to have a machine for sealing boxes in plastic at a retail shop I use to work at and I'm sure there are a million people in Australia with access to such equipment

It's pretty easy to re-seal a box if you have a box sealer at work. Even a genuine K&N at $149 is about $50 above the going retail price. I just wish I could buy one for my 13x3" Ford Racing air cleaner.

PS: If you want to tell a genuine K&N filter it has the letters moulded into the rubber along with the part number.
