Default Bang from front end under hard braking

Under hard braking I get 1 bang from the front end. If you stop, hold the brakes on and reverse it goes bang agian. But if you pull up normally, hold the brakes on and drive forward & back, kick the wheels, rock or bouncing the front end and it all is silent. Any body else had this or know of a cure.

Sorry Chris, I can only guess.

Don't brake hard, and the noise won't ocur.

My guess is upper/lower ball joints, but for it to only do it when braking hard, it could also be a sticky calliper or two. The Pedders test is a good suggestion, as it will eliminate suspension if there's nothing wrong.

ball joints would be my guess also. unlikely to be a sticky caliper...how many K's has the car done?

I think your right. I had a similar noise and it was gone when the ball joints were replaced

A quick way to see if these guys are right with the ball joint theory is to jack up the body until the front wheel(s) are off the ground, get a bar under each wheel and lift the wheel and see if there's any movement.

Thanks GK read your reply and raced off to Pedders at Bankstown here in Sydney great help.

They spent a lot of time checking over the suspension and everything else they could think of including brakes engine mounts. Even disconected the ABS still not found the problem. At no additional charge.

The only thing they can suggest is to remove the lower control arm and inspection of the front bushes which were replaced some time back with a urethane units. They can apparently ware when subject to extreme loads but they didn't budge when they levered the bush.

Have since put some whiteout on the bushes to see what happens.

Any other thoughts. AUII XR6 ocassional track day so need to break hard JC

Sway bar rubbers, replace them as a matter of course (easy job) the noise could be the bar hitting the chassis rail, I did mine recently & eliminated the worn (sway bar) rubbers as possible a source of irritation & was surprised at the amount of wear I found.

Probably not the case, but a car I just bought had the same sypmtons you describe - ended up being a loose bolt or 2 at the top of the shock!

I just had mine tested at Wholesale Suspension in Penrith ... and I was shown how much the control arm bushes move under braking and sudden movement changes .... I'd say it's worn bushed .... but i definitely have a stuffed driver's side ball joint as well. Will be replacing bushes at the same time (inners and outers).
