hang gliding

Hi everyone,

Anyone here been hang gliding or know anything about it? What its like, how expensive, how scary, coordination required etc etc, where can you do it (I'm in east Melbourne), anything really.
Going through another of lifes crisis's and looking for something to remind me that I'm alive and have always wondered about it. Probably not able to get into it immediately but would love to hear peoples opinions/experiences ANYTHING!

Get in to it mate! I don't fly a hangie but I do fly a paraglider. I would have a go at a hang glider too but I don't have the money/time.

I recommend having a tandem flight to make sure you are ready for the height and speed.

Nice pic thanks for that, does look like fun! Are you in Vic?

When you say you do not have time to do hang gliding what does this mean? Is it due to maintenance or setup time or flight time??? I really know nothing so just wondering!

How high do you get in that thing and how long are you up for?

Hi guys - I fly around SE Qld and in Manilla NSW. Highest flight to date 9500ft asl, longest distance 95km and 4.5 hours

When I say I don't have time to hang glide - I mean that you need to devote quite a bit of time to one or the other when you start out. Add a relationship, a house and other hobbies(cars, mtn bikes etc) then your weekends become quite full.

That photo was taken on the first day of the World Champs in Manilla - I snuck a quikie flight in before the gun pilots had their turn.Paragliding World Champs

The drummer in my band is a paraglider. His mum and dad own "the Pub" in Manilla.

Our band played at the pre-worlds presentation last year, it was an absolute hoot.

Oh ok thanks for that! wow 9500ft sounds high to me however I don't know what asl is. If you travelled 95 clicks what do you do walk back?! Do you have a gps and someone to come get you or something? Can't you land at the same place you took off from? Sorry about all the questions again... :voldar02:

asl = Above Sea Level

After 95 km - pack up, walk to a road and put your thumb out. It took me about 2 min. to get a lift. I sat in the truck with my glider on my lap, Now thats where the paraglider wins over the hang glider.

You don't have to go away from the hill if you don't want to - but the challenge of cross country is mostly what people are in it for.

Hi Dan,

I have read somewhere that you could start for about $2000 using second hand gear and maybe $3000 - 4000 minimum for new gear.

Got the impression that if your not buying new you should be very careful about what you are buying, as in is it the correct size for your wieght and what condition is it in (possibly you could find someone to inspect it?).
BTW this is hang gliding I am refering to.
