im studying Industrial Design, and if i maintain my current GPA of 5.0 i can do honours next year.

so to me its pretty important at the moment.

really depends what you want to do though. i never cared about it til i realised i can do honours.

I was never interested in post grad studies immediately after completing undergrad, so i never put any emphasis on GPA. So long as i passed i was comfortable that my time was not being wasted. 4.9 EF "P1 and occasional credit" Futura.

I was never asked about my GPA when applying for my job. They wanted to know my degree of course and they had a look over my transcript but that was it.

FYI that was a banking and finance degree.

Im not playing down the importance of GPA's, but to be honest... ive never been asked (good thing too because ive no idea what my GPA was).

I did drop out of one subject i believed i would fail, so i got a withdraw no fail instead of a fail.

I bust my **** to keep my GPA up just shy of a 6 (never got worse than credit, never got better than distinction) at the moment, because well A) I could do honours B) Im thinking of doing law at UQ or UoS which needs an insane selection rank C) Some graduate positions require a Credit Average.

Cant say id drop a subject though- too expensive, unless i was looking at a fail which would really screw up the works.

I didn't even know we used GPAs in this country. So to say that I didn't keep track of mine is an understatement. But then I failed and repeated subjects so I probably wouldn't have wanted to know, and I never intended on doing any honours or going on to a Masters degree. I know a couple of guys in my graduating class that went on to do PhDs.

Some places look at marks and others look at other personality and intellectual traits when hiring so don't put too great an emphasis on it.

As for dropping a subject, is it still early enough in the semester for it not to count as a grade? And like Fairlane said is it early enough that you don't have to pay for the whole semester of the subject? That would be two important factors.

I failed 2 subjects and withdrew from one, but I still got the piece of paper at the end of it. I supplied my grades when I applied for jobs, but never got asked about them. Some weren't that great, some were OK and some were excellent.
Got a job and haven't looked back since. That was 8 years ago.

I don't think it's your GPA so much that concerns companies hiring. Some companies i.e. ANZ, NAB require a Credit average and don't mention a specific GPA. Grades do count for some organisations, so it's all relative.

Then again, I have a friend who averaged 51 and still secured a spot with ANZ. Go figure.

Grade Point Average (I think). It's a term used alot in the USA. It's a bit like the TER (Tertiary Entrance Rank) as in it's a overal average score on a predetermined scale for your schooling, but of course the TER is only issued at the end of year 12.

Like I said in my earlier post, I didn't even think we used GPAs here. Live and learn I guess.

Think i'm currently on a 5 but after this term might be down to a 4 something. Buying a house and working a full time plus part time, keeping a relationship plus marking building serveying uni subjects for my boss who is a lecturer doesn't leave me with much steem to study my own degree much. I'm afraid i might fail Engineering Physics A. Not all that hard if i had my mind on the job.

I'd be happy to get a GPA of 5 however i would be toked to actually be finished a degree and wouldn't care if i got a 1. LOL. But degree=more money. :

my gpa didn't affect me at all in getting a job after uni, noone ever asked me what it was.

my gpa was 2.3 but it muct be a different scale over here. a 2 gpa was a credit average and a 3 gpa was a distinction average.

that being said i wouldn't have minded doing honours but you need at least a 3 gpa im pretty sure.

sorry, accounting degree. things like vacation programs etc have more of an effect on your chances of getting a job in the public sector but i am happy in the private sector!

Best thing to do is to pass your course, go out and get a job with a company who'll pay for you to do further education.

Depends on the degree.

With law, GPA is quite important, especially for doing Honours.

Most graduate programs have a minimum GPA requirement which increases every year. Private sector can be picky with it too.

Pays to do as well as you can really...
