So I moved to the USA....

Well a while ago I bit the bullett and took a Job in the USA and migrated here from Melbourne Australia. arrived last week and its been a very hectic week with a heap of travel BUT, I have enjoyed it so much, am based and NOW living in Sacramento California, I know its early but can already see just how much fun and better I will be. I work in the ERP Systems area and there is that much work here its not funny, if anyone from Australia has any SAP and or Peoplesoft experience and SERIOUSLY would and is interested in migrating to the USA, PLEASE PLEASE contact me....the company I am working for is looking for approx 200 other employess in all areas of SAP/Peoplesoft. The Money and support available so far, well for me makes it all worth while, along with the possibility of living just about anywhere you would like makes it VERY interesting. So far the main thing that really sticks out is just how CHEAP it is to live and be here cars,electronics and everyday things along with shopping are SO SO SO cheap, to give an example 1 case of Corona beer here is like 14 bucks...mmm BEER.... I feel safe in the area I am in and have several contacts here.

PS Driving on the wrong side of the car on the wrong side of the road sucks....

Oh and BONUS there is NO water restrictions here...so when I buy my own pride and joy. I can wash her everyday, that and Maguires car care products are very very cheap..

Hmm i've been to california 3 times.. although i love it everytime - i honestly don't know how i'd go living there... People can say that Australia and America are the same so don't bother going there but i still think they're very different. Hope all goes well - you've done what alot of people i know couldn't, should be a very exciting aspect of your life.

At the Moment in california, you are looking at around 3.20 a Gallon....it cost me about 40 bucks to fill the tank the other day...

Its impossible to explain in Laymans terms Doc...its basically a system that requires NO other systems in place, it will handle every aspect of your company.....

I suggest maybe googling ERP systems.

We use SAP at work, It is an excellent system, and in my experience we have had no issues with it at all. I could see it getting nasty though if you were in there messing around.

DOC, in laymans terms ERP or Enterprise Resource Planning is essentially a very large matrix. You pump in data, figures and design a series of scenarios or wanted outcomes, and the ERP system clunks and churns out a series of actions you are required to perform to reach that outcome, and the dates on when those actions should be started and completed.

Obviously it requires alot of very complex programming to setup the parameters so it doesnt spit out nonsense.

For Example, lets say you are Holden and want to build 50,000 cars by the end of 2009. You would program this as an outcome and then program in lead times, resources manpower etc. It will spit out how much cheap tin to buy from asia, how many plastic baubles to buy from the reject shop, and how many people with poor hand eye coordination you will require to build the car, along with all the timelines and automated reminders of when to perform actions and warnings when the actions arent met on time.

You forgot to add its only worth about 20 Million plus in a simple form...LOL

Its a very very expensive piece of Software...BUT there is currently NOTHING on the market that could even look at coming close to getting near it...

its also apart from above does...

Accounts Payable, Payroll, finance, HR, Account receivable, materials Management, stock ordering and balances, and just about anything else you could even think of...

I specialise in the Payroll/HR and Finance sections of the system.

Was 40 USD from dead set empty to totally full....LOL I dont even know how many gallons I put in...it sucks you have to totally pre pay for every bit of petrol here so you end up going in twice once to pay and once to collect your change...or you put in enough for a while rather than filling up

the 20 million for the outlay is nothing compared to the continual upkeep of the system after implementation. High complexity always yields high maintenance costs, or if you dont want to pay the maintenance, poor reliability. And the costs are high to maintain due to the lack of people with SAP skillsets.

Of course, all the SAP systems in the world, cant help managers and CEO's who can barely solve their daily 8 hour battles with sudoku.

Too many times I see ERP systems implemented to help poor performing decision makers rather then a management cleanout. I know which is cheaper!

Great to here that things went well with the move.

If you get a chance, head out to the Napa and Sonoma Valley's. Great wine regions out there and some nice wines. I personally worked in the Geyser Peak winery out at Geyserville on the 101 highway in the Sonoma Valley. Great wines and great people to work with. The wife and I spent the majority of our time in that region, living in Healsburg. We did happen to drive past Sacramento, but that was only on our way to Reno and Lake Tahoe.
Lake Tahoe is another picturesque spot to visit. Also it's supposed to be a great ski resort in the winter!

40USD is less than 50AU I think (just).

It's around 84c to the US dollar last time i checked.

We use SAP at work and the workers don't like it. It's great for bean counters and management for tracking info but for users it's clunky and belongs in the DOS era. EG if you want to print the displayed page you can't just hit print but have to go through several layers and then, get this, you have to exit the page before it will print. It's not intuiative at all. Also it costs an arm and a leg to maintain, train and update - no wonder the IT people love it! We are implementing it for our safety isolation system and our company has probably spent up tp $4 million (most of it hidden costs ie labour) and it is time consuming and very painful. Besides that it's great!!!!!!!

What does it mean for end of line production figures compared to outlay of the system?

To my understanding it doesnt improve productivity its only a streamlining process.Tell me more if any one knows?
