Shouldn't Vic Roads have a list of cars on a website somewhere?
This link may be of help. I didn't find a list as such, but it may be of help. http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/Home/...erVehicles.htm Some interesting info though. High Powered Vehicle Restrictions From 1 July 2007, new restrictions on driving high powered vehicles will be introduced for probationary licence drivers who obtain their licence from 1 July 2007. From this date a probationary licence holder will not be able to drive a vehicle if it has: An engine of eight or more cylinders; a turbocharged or supercharged engine (except diesel powered vehicles); an engine that has been modified to increase its performance; and/or any of the following high performance six cylinder vehicles as published in the Government Gazette: Make Model Release Year/s Cylinders BMW M 1998 6 BMW M3 1994 - 2004 6 BMW M5 1990 6 BMW Z4 2006 onwards 6 Nissan 350Z 2002 onwards V6 Honda NSX 2 Door Coupe 1991 – 2002 V6 Porsche 911 1993 - 2006 6 Porsche Boxster 1999 - 2006 6 Porsche Cayman 2006 onwards 6 Mercedes Benz SLK 350 2004 onwards V6 Mercedes Benz C350 2005 onwards V6 Mercedes Benz C36 1995 6 Vehicles which are excluded from these restrictions are: Turbocharged or supercharged diesel powered vehicles (without engine performance modifications); all models of the Smart car, produced by Mercedes Benz; and the following vehicles with low powered turbocharged or supercharged engines as published in the Government Gazette: Make Model Release Year/s Smart All models 1998 onwards Suzuki Cappucino 1992 - 1997 Daihatsu Copen 2003 onwards The current power to weight restrictions will continue to apply for drivers who obtain their probationary licences before 1 July 2007. If you want to buy a vehicle but you are unsure whether it has eight or more cylinders, or if it has a modified engine, or is either turbocharged or supercharged, or has any other features which would make it illegal for you to drive under the high powered vehicle restrictions, then your first step is to ask the car dealer who is selling the car. You could also contact the manufacturer directly for more information. If you are still unsure or doubt the information given, seek further advice from a licensed mechanic. Penalties From 1 July 2007, the penalty for driving a high powered vehicle will be three demerit points and a maximum fine of approximately $1100. These penalties will apply to both the current power to weight restrictions and the new high powered vehicles restrictions. GK

My handbood Series 1 states the weight of a S1 XR as 1530kg. The power is 185kw so the rating is 121
This is from the Vic Roads Site Power to Weight Ratio Calculator Enter vehicle power (in kW) 185 Enter vehicle weight (in kg) 1530 Your power to weight ratio (kW per Tonne): 121 Your vehicle is not classed as a high powered vehicle. So is correct, Series 1 XR 8 with 185kw engine (not modded) is ok, but the Series 2-3 with their 200 and 220 kw engines are out. GK

1530 is the kerb weight of a Forte.
In reality it's actually closer to 1600 kg.

Simple:
Got your P's before July 1? You can drive any 185kw V8. You cannot drive a 200 / 220kw series 2/3 XR8. The rule is anything with a power to weight ratio of 125kw/tonne or less. If you're not getting your P's until after July 1 (I know we're on the 9th at the moment) then you may not drive any: - V8 - High performance 6 (BMW, etc) - Turbo / Supercharged car Good luck with it all.

The calculation has to use the kerb weight and the stock output at the engine a court will not use any other figures. This was talked about sometime ago that a court will not even look at actual weights or dyno figures.

I have just recieved a second email from ford customer information as the first email only stated that the kerb weight for an AU series 1 to 3 sedan is 1530kg, but did not state if a 6 or 8 cylinder engine. In the second email it refers to the stated kerb weight of 1530kg as follows,
"Approximate kerb weight for a falcon XR6 fitted with the high performance 4.0L Intech OHC 6-cylinder engine and 5 speed manual transmission" Therefore an XR8 (series 2 200kw) would only have to weight an extra 70kg to be below the 125kw/tonne limit. Vicroads guidelines states kerb weight and flywheel output to be used in the calculations, therefore a certified weight bridge certificate of 1600kg or higher and the manufactures stated flywheel output of 200kw would be satisfactory, but a dyno reading would not as it indicates rear wheel output and not flywheel output. cheers Dean |
