The police pulled me over last night at Everton Park, told me to turn off my foglights as they are too bright. They told me they are doing a blitz on XR6,XR8 and SS Commodores. I have had no dramas in the last 3 years and I always drive with them on at night, dusk, dawn, cloudy or long trips. Are they now illegal??
PS after I drove off I put them on again anyway

Was it foggy last night? :
Although there was a thick smoke haze and Qld transport site says fog lights can be used in thick smoke This is the only rule I could find on the matter and it seems to be for rears only. You may only drive with rear fog lights on if you are in heavy fog or hazardous weather conditions causing reduced visibility. If you are caught using fog lights where conditions are not hazardous, or where visibility is not reduced, you can be fined $30 and get 3 demerit points.

I have never been pulled over because of them, I have been pulled over a couple of times for an RBT, and have always had them on and nothing has been said. I had a unmarked SS pull me over one time and even he had his fog lights on.

I have always thought that lamps with clear lenses like those on the XR are driving lights..............fog lamps are either a yellow colour or have lenses that spreads the light to help it cut through the fog ?
From memory the use of fog lamps has always been illegal in non-fog conditions. Driving lights on the other hand could only be used with high beam so as not to distract other road users. (Assuming you don't use high beams when there is oncoming taffic) I have to say I leave the driving lights on around town as they light up pot holes and kerbing far better than the headlights. Cheers, Dave. |

Personally I think poorly aligned Xenon and SUV headlights cause more dazzle issues than the under bumper lights which most cars are now running. Cheers Dave. |

This will always be an emotive issue. The majority of people who drive around with their fog lights on during the day in clear weather do so purely for the "LOOK AT ME" effect.
The anger at being prevented from this displaying extrovertish behavior is quite real and a personal afront. To them, being seen driving by others is far more important than the actual driving itself. This is exactly the same reason that ricers fit neons, spinners, cannon exhausts, ultra doof doofs or whatever and if it does not cause any safety or health issues I personally do not have a problem with it. If, on the other hand, such modifications or behavior do affect other road users then such things, in my opinion, should be restricted. Of course there is the small minority who actually did use their fog lights for what they perceive are safety reasons. Fortunatly they are still able to use their low beam legally and not be mistaken for "LOOK AT ME" ricers.... |

The rule is a difficult one. In Canberra, fog is in patch's and its thick. Are we mean't to turn them on an off all the time. I wish fog lamps were setup like the auto lights or the auto wiper's. Then there is no need to even worry about them.

creampuff ... hmmm, says it all really.
Just consider yourself lucky you got off with a warning. You could have been booked for an offence ... ignorance is not a defense, nor is your "belief" that you have some doG-given right to use your fog lights any time you wish. They are for FOG, funny that! Now you've had your sook, dry your eyes and get over it. |
