I know alot of you AU owners have trouble filling up your tank because the pump keeps clicking, well it drives me crazy. I've tried lots of different servo's and tried holding the nozel different and nothing seems to work. So I thought I would pull back the boot liner and see if there was anything(not that I have any idea what I'm looking for). I found this plastic thing and have no idea what it is, just wondering if anyone can help me out. It looks like some sort of breather but I'm not sure.
Thanks |

Yep mine is Series 1 and it has the same thing. The fuel filler door is behind the solid black plastic bit, this other unknown part has rubber flaps on it ?

the thing with the rubber flaps on it is used to stop pressure from building up in the cab by venting to atmosphere and then closes to stop dust from entering the cab, its the same thing that is on the Utes (the speaker grills on the back of the cab)

Easy fix ... convert it to LPG.
And then you get to use the locking clip ... and not have to hold the nozzle the entire time when filling. Much cheaper and less annoying than petrol as well. There ... problem solved .... :hihi:

I once saw a VN Commodore with its rear bumper missing and it had a massive sound system in the boot. I could see these type of vents around the parts of the car that would normally be covered by the bumper and they were flapping in time with the bass / beat. It was quite amusing to watch and they had the same sort of flaps as this thing.

The filling problem is an easy fix that takes about 5 mins. Inside the filling socket there is the size reducer that has to be installed by law so only the unleaded fuel pumps can be used. I dont know why these things are still required as there is only unleaded fuel available now???? Anyway, inside this there is a small steel flap that is supposed to open when you insert the bowser nossle and close when you withdraw the nossle. This flap breaks off and becomes stuck in the filler tube. Get a coat hanger, bend the end of it over and go fishing down the tube. Once you have it near the top a pair of long nose pliars will assist you to get it out. I imagine it could be a little fiddely but I was lucky and had it done in 5 mins, with no more filling dramas. Good luck and let everyone know how you get on!!

Have to agree with the broken flap in the tank opening, mate had the same problem. He had a mecahnic take the tank out under warrenty to fix it. Would not want to have to pay that bill!! It fixed the problem and the car now fills like it should. Just look in the tank opening for the pump hole, if it looks covered it has the flap in place, if its all clear then then flap has broken and fallen down - good luck!
