the window etching idea is ok if they use the vin number but for the reason you have, its not good to use the rego number.

depends how deep the etching has gone, a windscreen place might be able to buff it out, apart from that you might need to replace the glass.

I remember many years ago I bought a new car and also got a vehicle protection system which included the window etching, it wasn't the rego number but I recall they said a thief would have to replace all the glass to get rid of the numbers....this was a long time ago though and Im not sure if it can be buffed out

Thats not a bad idea.....still, using the numberplates in the etching hardly is likely to deter any thieves anyway!
At least the etching would make more sense

Etching is usually done with acid. Find a place that does this and get them to wipe yours.

some use an acid wipe and others use a sandblaster.

the acid system usually leaves less of a mark than the sandblaster.

one way out would be to have the area where the numbers are re-etched without using the number stencils so that you just end up with a small oblong of blasted glass. would get rid of the numbers and if done right would not look out of place.
