Just wondering, does anybody know what qualifications you need to be "salesman" at a dealer/yard?

I'm interested in this too because I'll need another job soon after I finish school this year. 1 isn't bringing in enough income for me. ( Don't worry about contacting me yet as i've got a year or so to go before i start looking).

you don't need any qualifications as such, however previous sales experience is highly regarded. If you don't have any experience, don't worry, just apply/approach dealers, as it is the way you present yourself that could be the deciding factor.

Also, being a salesman, I assume you would have to know about all the tiny details of the car and its competitors?

you will be trained in product knowledge. I would do your own bit of research before you apply, as that will impress

Have you been to any major dealer lately? ........ don't assume

No qualifications required and training is on the spot. Things are very quiet in the industry but hope you get what you want. Of course a bit of sales background helps though but dont let that deter you.

Do they get payed a base wage? Then commission from sales? Its better than working in IGA and anything extra would help, I don't work enough because I only work on race meets in my current work which is like a few times a month which in a way is good because I'm doing year 12 this year, but not bringing in enough cash. After school is done, then its open season to "money farm" haha.

Not exactly "money farm" at the moment. Surely you could do a retail traineeship through IGA while you are there which will be highly advantageous if you plan to continue working in retail/sales.

Its mainly commission so very hard at the moment and could be a hard slog. If you have an in at IGA, it may be worth having a look and see what they offer. It will help with what you do later on.

That would be a fairly hard job then, I've got no retail experience except for 1 week at Bunnings during work experience 2 years ago now. At the moment I work in Audio/Visual and have been for the last 3 years come Melbourne Cup Week this year.

That doesn't have anything to do with sales, but dealing with people up until recently.

Any job anyone does, Bunnings or Coles on weekends, is one step closer to what you want to do later. Everything, no matter how menial it may be, goes on you resume. Everyone has to start somewhere, even if its washing cars at the local dealer.

Its difficult, especially with the media absolutley pounding recession into everyone. Thinking of what to do after school, or during the last year, is hell but just do what you can as more experience will always lead to better things.

At the moment, I think you would be hard pressed to find any Ford dealers that are looking for new salesmen, after all the new car scene isn't really doing to well at the moment. Sorry to be a bit of a downer.

i did exactly that, moved from year 12 into car sales at a ford dealership and iv now been working there for over a year.
when i first started the industry was great, but its not soo good now.

its happens every now and then, but you have to be professional and deal with it.
hey, there are tyre kickers, and then there are people that are there to waste your time. all they want is a price from us so they can go to their local dealer and keep them honest and buy it there.

its all about patience, persistence and showing respect. That's the professional way.

Other than that the work is great. Meet new people everyday, a lot of interaction and knowing every little thing about every car.
If you have a passion for cars, then you'll have a passion for selling them.

There are no qualifications usually required however like any job yr 12 is a must. All training is done at the dealership. If you've never sold cars before then you will start as a sales cadet. Essentially a cadet is an apprentice.
As a cadet you will be required to watch and learn from the more experienced sales members. Don’t expect to make a lot of money straight away. You probably won’t even be allowed to talk to customers for the first few weeks.

You will paid a base retainer, as a cadet its approx 28k a year. From there you will earn commission for each car you sell, customers who finance through the dealer and a bonus if you can deliver higher numbers of cars in a month.

It takes some time for a cadet to become a sales executive/consultant. This all depends on the cadet's growth and attitude.

Having a good knowledge of brand but also other brands out there. If you’re a car enthusiast then this usually come naturally.

Almost all salespeople I've come across sadly know precious little about the vehicle they are trying to sell you.

One didn't know how to fold the rear seat down and another locked the keys in the car I wanted to have a look at!

But there would of course be many who do knwo about what they're selling, it's just that I haven't met any.

All the above is quite true, I am a Sales Manager of a Yard. I have a girl working for me who hasn't sold before but was very keen she has been with us for 7mths & her Year to date is just under $50,000 so she is on target to earn around $80,000 per annum & a company car, not bad for someone with no higher education or skills & I dare say she will improve. Saying that I see a lot that don't make it. You lose your weekends, public holidays etc. My sugestion is go for a yard that is selling and at the monment that would be a Toyota yard (1 in 4 cars sold is a Toyota). I love my Fords but it is hard to make a dollar in those dealerships for now.
ps You have to live with the tunnel vision opinions that people have of all salesman. Unfortunatley a handfull of cowboys give the whole industry a bad name even though majority of people have a pleasant experience it's just that the people who have had a poor one are quick to make themselves heard and happy customer are a little slow to voice their say as it is just expected to be a perfect experiance which it is most of the time. We all remember the bad steak you had a Pub but all the other times you had it and it was OK is now forgotten.

A drivers license would have to be one of the main criteria no?
