my uncle lost his house at Kinglake West, just lucky that he wasn't living there at the moment, he was selling his house in Whittlesea and was going to move back into kinglake, his next door neighbours, lost their two little kids. Apparently only 3 houses are standing on National park rd.

My thoughts go out to everyone caught in the fires, victims and the animals that have lost their lives.

Yes thats how it is. So many people in terrible grief and so many still missing but putting familiar faces to the list makes it just a little more devasting to those that havn't been directly effected.

So sorry to all those that have lost some one close or have lost their place. Condolences to the the Naylor family ...... he really was a gentlemen.

we went through the kilmore and marysville area when we were down a year and a half ago on our honeymoon, it's a beautiful place to visit.

i was gutted and absolutley disgusted seeing the fires rage through there hearing they are diliberatley lit.

i hope the person who started is on a plane on their way out of the country because the locals will get you if they find you.

Im praying for the survivors and towns people of the areas lost (and im not a religious person normally).

we had a big bushfire come close to mums house in lake macquarie 5 years ago that was the work of idiots who stole a car and torched it near toronto west. that pretty much burnt half of west lake macquarie up. that was scary enough, i cant begin to imagine what you guys are going through.

stay safe and keep your chins up, we stick together when stuff like this happens. that's mateship and the australian way.

Over the next couple of days I expect that death toll will rise a fair bit. Anyone watching the fires from whittlesea humevale will know just how devastating and huge the fire actually was. And we couldnt even see all of it. I'm amazed there was survivors, we could hear the roar and explosions all the way down the mountain and you could see how fast the flames were moving through the tree tops. I spoke to one lucky bloke and he said the fire was at his house within 15 seconds of having spotted it and 10 seconds later both his sheds exploded.

We have confirmed a lot of our friends survived but some are still missing.

Yeah, just heard Brian Naylor and wife perished in the fire.
My dept at work, sold him a dozer when he retired from Ch 9.

I just wish he made some firebreaks with it.

Yup, his place on Coombs rd was very heavily surrounded by tree's. The way it came up from the hill below from Strathewan they probably didn't know it was close until it was too late. The wind changed direction so quickly and it would of given them virtually no notice.

For me that footage of the bloke running back to get his valiant showed how powerful the wind and flames were, it was across the road like a giant blowtorch

I really doubt a few fire breaks would have stopped it.

Having seen and fought the force of the blue mountains christmas day fires in 2000 and watch your family's sheds go up within minutes, sometimes you just cant escape or do enough quick enough to make a difference.

We had 1 RFS Firey come running in to the house saying get out, not even he was able to, it cut him off from the truck within a few minutes.
We were just lucky the previous owners had installed an external sprinkler system with a direct feed out of the Grose River.
Saved the house, save the cars and us most importantly.

These fires, obviously much worse though...

I think a cruise is good and all, but i think it takes up too much time going point A-B, mostly people end up spending more time standing around talking than actually cruising anyway...
Also means more organising/planning and stuff.
Would be more practical to just have people gather at one place(in each state), maybe like a huge car park or something, put out some signs on major roads near by & break out a few gazebo's and BBQ's get some sausages going.

Im sure some of the clubs here are good at this, if not see the Lions Club they have volunteers who do this stuff.
Something for the Mods here to ponder.

I know it would take a lot of organisation but a state by state cruise leaving or arriving at a particular point at a set time for a picnic/gathering/morning tea/breakfast etc.

Was thinking donate what you can, bring what you wanna bring etc...

We saw the terrifying footage of a bloke running down a dirt road toward his valiant ( AP5 or AP6 ), while the fire was rapidly approaching. Does anybody know who he is - and did he get away without problems?

On another note - Just saw on the news a story of a couple who survived the fire by going into a cellar within their house. They were OK.

Obviously escaping by car was not a good idea unless you left early in the piece, so it seems logical to me that a cellar in (or near) homes would be a great lifesaver in these situations. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

according to the news . most people survived indoors, even though the house burnt down. but still i dont know how . in some cases 4 in a household . 2 die , 2 survive . i dont know how. perhaps it's a matter of staying inside whilst the flames engulf your house and surrounds and just getting out at the right time assuming most of the fire outside has passed .
i dont know how they escape death , this is the only reason i can think of .
there have been cases of people jumping in the pool with a pipe to breath , and they die of oxygen deprival and heat .

Agreed that being in a basement or cellar would be the safest place, with a wet rug over top.

It's bloody saddening to see all this go down, it's good to see people pulling together.

I think that what defines an Aussie, always willing to help our neighbour...unlike in America where it seems some are too busy in raping and pillaging instead of helping out, Hurricane Katrina was a good example of this.

My Fiancee is a Radiographer at Dandy hospital.

She was telling me during her night shift last night they got all the overflow burn patients from the Alfred and St Vincents hospitals. She was saying there was just and endless amount, and when she left work at 8 this morning they were still coming in.

My late Uncle was a member of the Scoresby CFA during the Ash wednesday fires, he had some nightmarish stories about those fires. At one stage he was taking a crew back to the Dandynong fire station. They were just near cardinia reservoir, and they were cut off by the flames. Had no choice but to just drive through it. Melted off the lights on the roof. I was a member of the CFA for a short time. But i never experienced anything as bad as this.

This is a sad day for all Victorians..

I have an uncle who lives at Kinglake (and family at Hurstbridge), I was just happy to hear that hes alright and the kids werent home
having just come from that same area earlier in the week, I am seriously shocked. Although the area was VERY VERY dry and 46 degree heat just made it an inferno. A fire in the area was inevidable I'm afraid.

My uncle is in serious shock about what has happened, his house has survived which is another good thing.
