Thought it would be good to find out when people went for their license (straight away or not for a while) and how did they learnt (e.g the old man)?
Cheers, Anthony P.S What did you drive? Also, auto or manual? P.P.S We're talking P's, for now... (poll is for P's only, hopefully, somehow, a poll for L's can eventually be made)

i went for my l's probably a month or 2 after i could, tbh at the time was a little scared untill i had the chance to flog some paddock bashers around and then i was all good.
learner car was mainly a 2000 model diesel manual toyota hilux, stall proof lol but slow as , great for learning as u can really see the traffic around u etc. occasionally drove a 1990 excel manual and a 1997 mercedes c180 auto. i feel i learnt alot more about driving tho when i was on my p's in my own car, a 1990 xf panel van, its not untill your p's that u really learn to drive i recon |

Took Dad out for one lesson, then drove my instructor to my test. Passed on the first go, speeding and a compression lock up to boot lol.

Bought a car and drive around the streets by myself,no one to teach me so that was the only way for me to learn.
Drove to the R.T.A and passed second time so i was happy considering i had no instructor lessons at all.

i went and got my ''P"s on my seventeenth birthday, got my "L"s exactly 3 months before as soon as i was legal.
when i went for my "P"s i drove my own XW falcon 3 speed manual. (when i turned up at the police station to get my "L"s cop made the comment "didnt i see you driving that car last week." he knew he had, i was taking it home from buying it with dad following behind. cant actually remember learning to drive. i grew up on a farm and was steering cars/trucks/tractors from the time i could stand on the seat and see over the dash, just progressed from there as my legs grew. i guess the first things i really drove by myself would have been the fergy TEA20 tractor and an old bedford bread van we had as a padock basher. with 2 older brothers, an older sister, mum and dad, i had plenty of teachers.

Got my Ls about 4 months after I was eligible, first car I drove was my dad's ZH Fairlane 500 302, then a mix of my mum's Suzuki Swift Auto and the driving schools Nissan Pulsar 5 speed
Got my Ps straight after my 18th Birthday, (June 2004) and was driving my first car (an '89 Excel 5 speed, that 'wasn't as bad as you might expect') two days after my 18th. then I got my AUII Futura about 6 months later Then I got my HR in December 2007 driving an old non Turbo UD.

Back when I first got my licence, SA allowed you to get your L's at 16, P's at 16.5, and your full licence at 19 or 3 years after you got your P's (I think). I remember standing in line on my 16th birthday, waiting to sit my test for my Learner's Permit, and then standing in line again when I was exactly 16.5 to get my P's. Aaah... the freedom of having your own licence and not relying on friends or, worse, the folks, for a lift. As to how... first time behind the wheel was with my uncle in a Kmart car park. I ended up being one of the first to get my licence via log book, rather than test, so had 6 lessons with an instructor to go through the items in the log. I wanted to learn in a manual, but the instructor said because no one else I knew had a manual, there was no point in learning in a manual with him, because I'd have no opportunity to practice. I bought my first manual car a few months ago, and I really wish I'd learned earlier - it's hard to break 15+ years of habit (driving an auto). |

On my L's I drove around in both an 89' Rodeo diesel non-turbo (100kph is a challenge!) and a 93' EBII wagon, both of which were manual. I had driving lessons for about a week or 2 before getting my p-plates, which was less than a week after my birthday. The driving lessons are handy because they teach you the little tricks that they look for in the actual driving test. I passed first go. About 2 months later, I got the EA

Got my L's when I was 16 1/2 due to being an apparent illegal alien lol. I was born in NSW and a NSW birth extract was not good enough, took me 6 months to get a new certificate from NSW :
Got the L's and learnt in first a JB Holden Camira SL/X (If you can drive one of them you can drive anything lol) and a nice XD Falcon before moving on to a VR Acclaim and eventually my first car, a VL wagon : Got my P's the day after my birthday, passed on the first go and then went cruising : Before anyone says anything, I know there are a lot of Holden's there. I was a late learner lol.
