Volkswagen Golf 1.9 TDI. Most economical vehicle on sale in Australia, 55 litre tank and 5.5litres per 100km.. that's 1000km to the tank.

Starts at $27,990 for the Trendline 1.9 TDI Manual (6-speed - also available 6-speed automatic, and 6-speed DSG if I'm not mistaken).

It's got 77kW @ 4000rpm and 250Nm @ 1900rpm. If you're after a reliable, cheap to run vehicle that will hold its value, in my opinion you can't make a better choice.

We own a 2001 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 16V, its not the fastest car around, but in its class, it has no equal. Its economical, built exceptionally well, and holds its value very well also. It cost around $25,000 on the road, and is a superseeded model (new Polo was released in 2002), valued at approx $17,000 today. Most of its competitors that old, especially from Japan & Korea, would be lucky to fetch $10,000.
