Default Engin vibration

Hi all, my XR8 has seemed to have developed a vibration. Its not that noticable but its certainly there. Seems more aparent at low revs. Its like the harmonic balancer is out or something. Its definately the engin and not the wheels or breaks. Any ideas ?

I dont think its a missfire as it seems to be going quite well. It might be engin mounts though. I will have a close look owhen I get home.

Sounds like your already on the money. Harmonic balancer causes a vibration when buggered. If thats the case, they generally vibrate the most around 1500-1800rpm.

Took it to my mechanic and he seems to think its the engine mounts. He has ordered the mounts $207 each and he expects they will arrive Tuesday next week. He quoted me about 1.5 hours to fit so I am guessing ill be up for about $600.

This forum is doing some funny things. I will try again.

Took the car to my mechanic on Tuesday and he said it looks like the engine mounts. He has ordered the parts and they should arrive Tuesday next week. He said it should take about 1.5 hours to fit and the mounts are $207 each. I should be up for about $600. I hope this fixes the problem.

Bill, you posts appear to be working fine.

It will most likely be your engine mounts ($150-$200 each). If they are the same as my TE50's, they are fluid filled and collapse over time and cause an awful vibration at a certain rev range (mine was 1500 revs).

Cost me $300 for two (aftermarket, brand new) mounts and $200 fitting.

Secondly it could be the harmonic balancer.

Good luck.

My car has a similar problem, although it only happens at full throttle just before change of to the next gear.... COuld this be transmission? Its a big vibration (its an auto)

I would suggest that full throttle before gear change is higher revs which (correct me if I'm wrong) is most likely to be harmonic balancer or gearbox mount?

Hi all, finally fixed. It turned out that it was not the engin mounts. Replaced them but absolutely no improvement. Mechanic offered to take them back off and not charge me but we came to an arrangement and we left them changed. I then, after my mechanic said he had no idea, took it to another mechanic for a second opinion. Young bloke from another local shop had a look and seemed to know his fords. He said he was about 95% sure it was the harmonic balance. he said if it was not that he had no idea. So I took it back to my mechanic and he put a new harmonic balancer in yesterday and its all good again. He charged me $630 remembering thats two new engin mounts installed and a new harmonic balancer installed. Not bad at all. Ultratune in the city in Townsville. Speak to Blue.

Well afte this story and another i was watching I'm going to change mine.Same symtoms around 1800 and at the top of the rev range.
I had alread changed all the mounts, thought it might have been a slightly missused gearbox :
