Well that is clever thinking. If his results can be repeated and proven conclusively then maybe this will be a better way to save fuel.

Its a little rough around the edges sure, but good on him for thinking outside of the box (literally) and making it work!

I wonder what sort of mileage that shape would get if it was a newer petrol driven/hybrid car underneath?

No one seems to notice the bad economy of flat backed cars at highway speeds. Take a corolla and compare it to a prius/elantra for example.

it would also be interesting to see how much better it would be if a beater cleaned up the rough body work, a nice effort all the same, an au might ba an interesting shape for one of these projects.....

I think that deer would have been killed - at the very least, it's hooves would have been sliced off under that car, so it's as good as dead anyway. This is one of the reasons why things such as exposed intercoolers and other sharp hard surfaces down low aren't allowed, to give pedestrians and the like a chance. Not really funny.

I am interested in this coast down cd calculation! I will try that. I dont think cd's play as important a role as they should. The first AU1 falcon had the lowest ever in OZ, didnt do well cos of its shape, however went great on the HWY. Sadly its never been replicated.

What is the cd of an FG?

I would love to own a Fisker Karma. One of my fav cars right now. 0-100 in 5.8, 1300Nm of torque or something ridiculous like that. 100mpg! And the best part, it looks to stack up against a Quattroporte, Panamera, XJ-R...it looks nothing like a Prius.

hmm....that is some of the roughest body work i have ever seen. surely better craftsmanship would see better economy again.

as for his results, i would be interested to see if these could be proven....he hasnt exactly used any new technology, and his design is copied off some very old designs. If the design is so amazing, why arent car companies heading down this path?

For the same reason that the AU didn't sell; it doesn't appeal aesthetically.

Big crumple zones though, you could make the front cone out of that NURF stuff so if you hit a pedestrian, they'd probably be fine. Hey, this star trekkie idiot might be on to something. "I need 10,000 hot pockets stat".

Nah, good on him for having a crack and showing what some simple, yet ugly, additions can do to improve a cars aerodynamics.

Of course the mods would never stand a chance to get past any regulatory authority, that rear might be a good crumple zone for him, but its a nice spear for the person that hits him.

You do realise that it was the curved back (cockroach shell) of the AU that made it so slippery not the front and as soon as you fitted any sort of wing on the rear to make it look a bit less "AUish" you buggered it all up.

It is a shame really, I had a Ghia for several years and it got quite good fuel economy and went reasionably well (except for when it scared the hell out of me with the 180km/h speed limiter or the traction control that left you in the crawling in the middle of an intersection if there was a bit of gravel and a wheel spun slightly).

It was technically a great design but unfortunately not athsteticly so...
