Default Replacing steering rack opinion.

As the title suggests i'm looking at replacing my steering in my car after mine has become worn and leaking.

I'm looking to see how many of you guy's have done the job and wheather you used Reconditioned or a Remanufactored rack.

Pedders are going to do a Remanufactored rack for me, has any one else had one of these put into there car?

what else is out there that might be an option for me to get the best bang for buck.

I had a recoed rack put in my car-$220.00 (exchange) and $60 to have it fitted.
Cant complain has been faultless.

im paying, $374 from ford, with 2 year warrnty on it

I've put alot of recoed racks into various cars, with no issues relating to them being faulty.

Ive done it myself, but for $60 fitting you cant go wrong. We just pulled one off a wreck at the wreckers. This one leaks, but the other one was bent. To be honest, if its just leaking, I wouldnt even really worry about it, most AU racks leak, hehehe.

mine leaks as well, orignal ford one that is.

replacing it as a caution though, been told a few stories about them

if ford was going to install it, it would cost me 700 and something bucks

but because i have already paid for some labour on my car through my ex deisel mech im only paying fords price, and i get a warranty,

if your rack leaks, replace it
don't bother with a new one, a reco one is just as good, if not better. Some people see a reco rack as somehow inferior, it ain't.

from everything i've read about replacing steering racks it looks like pedders only do remanufactored reacks but do a ford forums discount though so that might be the way to go i reckon.

Agreed.

It's not unusual for a weak/faulty component to be identified and the recoed item is then actually better than the original.

Well then you should know 1 major fact... the young dont listen to the old, as the young know everything... but the old wont listen to the young, as the young are meant to know anything...

thats a fact i've been living with since i started in industry at the age of 15... 27 now and still have little older people listen to 10+ years experience...

Sorry to hijack the thread there :P

but back on topic... i have recently learnt of a steering rack seal leak in my own car... do i need to get a reco'd exchange, or can mine be reco'd without needing specialist tools?

edit: reminds me of the tale about the 15 year old who thought his parents knew nothing but by the time he reached 25 he was amazed how much they'd learned...

To just replace the parts that failed on your rack would be a waste of time i reckon might just end up doing more damage then good.

As this is my first time if realy mucked around with my steering i cant say much but if whats being said about reco's that there remachined cause once there flogged out there re-packed (parts put into worn racks) or re-welded and so on, were as reman's are a complet rebuild no repacks or re-welding (touch wood).

Strangely enough, re-coed racks ARE better than new racks. They replace everything that is worn or looks like it is wearing.
And it's cheaper than a brand newie.

However at the end of the day, it's your hip pocket that makes the final decision.

I too had a recoed rack put in. Much tighther then a standrard rack. Reco is def the way to go

bayfords in melb/coburg also reco`s racks in house, ring spare parts for a price they were very reasonable a couple of year ago, but i decided to reco mine myself(fool), to replace the end seals from memory you have to pretty much disasemble the bloody thing anyway (special tools anyone)? and you will need an alignment afterwards, don`t forget to ask what warranty they give you on your rack.

I am up for a new rack as well went to pedders they wanted around $700 reconditioned rack rang a place in Auburn Sydney they said $370 installed for a reconditioned rack.The only other cost on top is the wheel alignment.
In my books $370 is better than $700.
