I thought this failed in NSW? QUEENSLANDERS will be able to report car hoons through a special police hotline next month under plans to combat the thousands of revheads terrorising neighbourhoods across the state. Police Minister Neil Roberts will on Sunday reveal December 13 as the launch day for a new phone line - 13HOON - aimed at providing a memorable contact point and reducing the burden on triple-0. On Saturday Mr Roberts said people would be able to provide details including the hoon's car registration, vehicle description and location of the hooning when they called. "Queenslanders told us that they were fed up with hoons taking to our streets doing burn-outs, engaging in illegal drag racing and generally driving in an unsafe manner," he told The Sunday Mail. Incidents with no immediate danger will be forwarded to a police operations centre to have units respond when available, but triple-0 should still be called for urgent hoon cases. More than 23,000 vehicles have been impounded for 48 hours since anti-hooning laws were introduced in 2002. RACQ spokesman Paul Turner on Saturday welcomed the move but raised concerns car lovers may be wrongly targeted if the hotline was misused. "We would encourage any initiative that makes it safer for motorists," he said. Brisbane Districts Street Car Club president James Rigg on Saturday said his group was often mistaken for hoons when they gathered to appreciate each others' cars. "Within our club we promote safety and driving responsibly for all our members to do the right thing, so this is a good move," Mr Rigg said. "The more they crack down on it the better because if it gets worse the Government might not let older cars or cars with modifications on the roads at all." Mr Roberts said the new hotline gave an easy-to-remember central contact point to report hoons. "The Queensland Police Service emphasises that community members should not place themselves at risk to report this antisocial behaviour," he said. "For incidents which have occurred, the information phoned through to 13HOON will be detailed to police for follow-up and further investigation."

If they spent alllll the money they spent on these anti hoon campaigns and what have you, one places where hoons could gather/race ect LEGALY Then holy **** problem solved Seriously, even if its just a 1/4 mile strip it will give all the hoons somewhere to do what they're trying to do on the streets, Show off their car to everyone.

Im no hoon by any stretch...my mitsubishi colt shivers like a chihuahua when a V8 pulls up next to it! But im thinking that part of being a hoon is knowing they are doing it on the streets and eluding the coppers. Otherwise Ipswich would never have a hoon to report considering Willowbank raceway is just down the road and open for racing quite a few nights a week.

Im glad this statement was included in the article. About time the media started to understand the difference between "hoons" and us. We do not need them ruining our ability to drive older and/or modified vehicles on the road. |

Wonder what would happen if we all dobbed in those Speed Camera unit cars. I have never seen one driving at the speed limit. Had one fly past me the other day. And I was going about 10 over the limit myself.

The only way for this to be truely effective is to publicly establish, what an HOON actually is. Otherwise anyone with a modified vehicle will have issues. Have to say, the police in my area have done an excelent job getting the worst offenders under control. Don't here constant drag racing or backstreet moronisy on thursday, friday or saturday nights anymore.
I think I'll start a incompetant driver hotline. 1300 LEARNTODRIVE. Much bigger issue in my eyes. Just watch the amount of normal people in normal cars, that will be on the news, after a fatal collusion wilst on holidays. It's coming up to that time again. Having a safe christmas will be merely a pipe dream for some of us. Just hope it's nowone i care about.... later.

There is a HOON description somewhere. Its the actual wording written by some committee. Its hilarious.
Those of us with XR6T had better watch our backs because its the number one Hoon Car according to the committee. I will be using this number all the time to report the idiots covered in "Pet Peeves" thread.

I agree with that. I get dirty looks, rude gestures and beeping if I over take a vehicle doing less the the speed limit sometimes in my wagon. Its like they think that because I am on the wrong side of the road in a modified car legally over taking them when safe at the speed limit is the action of an hoon. What would stop people like that clogging up the hoon hotline with BS. I am on the boarder of QLD and NSW and there are only 50km/h and 100km/h zones but people doing a constant 70-80km/h regardless of the speed zone seems to be more a danger then someone doing the speed limit and the fact that a vehicle has a body kit or mag wheels on it should not mean that the driver is instantly labeled a hoon.

It is a publicity stunt.
Concerned pillar of society rings line and MAYBE police dispatched if not busy. Hoon ACTUALLY CAUGHT IN THE ACT and charged. (rather uncommon) Hoon not ACTUALLY doing anything and is not silly enough to admit doing anything, nothing can happen other than the usual "fear of God" and "we are watching you" speeches and maybe an impromptu roadworthy. 99.999% of the time dobber will not give evidence as he will be identified when in court and these sort of people almost always like to remain anonymous. Almost always these things are a waste of time (info from mouth of horse) as it is a very small group who seem complain over and over again and often about insignificant things. e.g. Perceived speeding while overtaking them when they are traveling at 25km/h under the limit or accelerating away from the lights faster than a snail with a sore foot or beeping at them for holding up traffic while they are giving way to an oncoming vehicle that is 10-15 seconds away from the intersection. Hence why police MAYBE dispatched.... |

I agree with the points that we should report people in Normal cars, like corollas, camerys, CX9, Hiaces and all the other normal cars that are pathetic at driving.
When I think of all the people who have almost crashed into me other the past few years, none of them have been hoons. Just yesterday this Old guy in a van almost sandwiched me between his van and a telegraph pole that was 1 metre away from the road because he decided to overtake me and then change into my lane when the front of his van was next to the front of my car. Ten seconds before he was behind me, but he just HAD to get pass me for some reason even though I was in a line of traffic. Drivers like that are a hell of a lot more dangerous then someone spinning the wheels for 5 metres away from the lights. |

So, Kyle Sandilands can 'hoon' away in his car, and get a police escort.... sorry, but when there are two standards clearly in play, I can't take any of this seriously.

They end up being used by frenemies too. Dob in someone who annoyed them at say a party, or is now going out with their ex type thing. Its utterly stupid to just allow random people to act as police. I cant see what they could do with the information, unless it was genuine, and the 'hoon' hung around, and the cops were available to respond and catch them at it.
Apparently, the main purpose is to route the calls to a number other than 000, they must get a lot of calls. So if its to free up emergency responses, then maybe its a good thing. If that is its real purpose then well and good, it wont result in anything different to 'hoons' than we have now anyway. Quote:
Although, as I said above, if it frees up 000 and lets the fogies feel like theyve achieved the same goal, alls good. |

Hoon motives depend where you live In say, Hervey Bay, the nearest form of organised racing is willobank, 4 hours away! Most nights my car enthusiast friends and i just chill at the Retrovision carpark in the centre of town just talking crap cause there isnt anything else to do. Shame tho that its the main meeting point for everyone and every p plater ends up there, we try to distance ourselves, but they always go off doing laps of the esplanade or main street, just because how bored they are. When we end up doing laps (keeping in mind we all have muscle cars), i admit we may speed abit or do a u turn with a lot of enthusiasm, solely for the fact there is nothing else to do Supply hervey bay with a Skid Pan and i can Guarantee you it will stop hooning. And im not just someone who just has an outside opinion like (no offence) most of you do, as i could be labelled a hoon just for hanging out at the car-park and doing laps of the streets :\ I say all the money needs to be spent on a mass survey, targeting the main hoon groups of most towns, then go from there for an effective solution.

Fantastic, now everyone fool who gets annoyed because I passed them "AT SPEED" (i.e. they are doing 50, speed limit is 80) can now dob me in.
Or if I speed up to 60 faster than they do so I can get in front before the lane merges... I now am worst than the anti-christ... yay stupid tax spending! |

Waste of time... Have reported my neighbour several times for driving unregistered car for 4 months now. Told them what time he normally comes home.
He is even known to Police. Funny enough he is still driving around doing it. The car is a heap of junk too.

Lol, wilst visiting mum yesterday this subject reared it's ugly head, So i asked her what she considered a hoon, and this was the reply (53 year old woman):
A hoon; Hangs his arm out the window Beeps his or her horn Rev's the engine Has loud music playing Accelerates quickly U get the idea. And she has two sons with highly modified vehicles, one in his 30's the other in his early to mid 20,s. Looks like im in trouble for everything but beeping the horn. lol later....

one false report can ruin a p platers license and they could have they're car crushed. so i'm not a big fan of this proposal. i think that money should go into fixing dodgy speed cameras

The other day I saw a Bus driver hanging his arm out the bus window. I couldn't believe he was hooning around in a school bus. He even beeped at a car that cut him off. What a drain on society this guy is, someone shoudl report him for hooning. |
