Wet Xmas for QLD

I think I already posted something about that in one of the flood threads.

I saw it on a doco, there were a few critters in the tree, and a snake just swam up and found a spot. It even backed away from critters it would usually eat to find a lone spot for itself. I even expected the critters to jump to the water, but no, they stayed put too.

Was really strange.

A few weeks back on the ABC website there was a sad yet heartwarming (?) picture taken by the owner of a tinny..... He had rescued several severely wet and shaking wallabie... There was 5 or 6 of these scared little animals sitting calmly in his boat as he took them to safety.

Now for a wild and timid little animal like a wallabie to sit calmly in a boat with a human you know that they are more scared and thinking of survival then the nasty usually nasty and scarey human!

Yeah well the other critters, like the wallabies you mention, are counter intuitive to what youd expect, it must be the lesser of two evils. For the snake on the other hand it makes sense not to try and eat them.

Snakes cant just eat and run, they need to separate their jaws and take a while to consume it let alone digest it and then regurgitate the fur, bones and whatnot. So not eating may be a survival thing for the snake. Wouldnt want to be halfway through the swallow and have to shove off, they cant just spit it out at that point.

Still, they would bite as a fear response just the same so not much help to us mere humans.

I've finally managed to get on here now that I am at home (briefly) after 3 very long days of work.

After a friend of mine became stranded at Albion going to look at the flood waters, I must re-iterate this message.....

Keep AWAY from flood water, do NOT try and cross a moving body of water and DON'T try and be a hero, make preparation and get out while you can.

Brissy is tipped to peak at 4am this morning so now is the best time to get yourself ready.

P.S. As for the looters, the Mayor of Ipswich had a very good take on it, "If anyone is caught looting they will be used as depth indicators" or something to that effect.

Finally got home from Rocky after some big days. Took the Fast Cat from Yeppoon to Gladstone 2 days ago, plane was 3hrs late to Brissy due to air traffic and we would of missed theMelb flight so we stayed there the night and came back late last night.

Coming into Brisbane there was water everywhere from 25mins flying away. Also nerve racking awaiting confirmation relatives in Toowoomba, Helidon and Gatton were all ok, one was missing for a while but he was out in the paddocks helping for several hours. Their daughter is in Gundy- hope the levee holds tonight or that town will be inundated too.

Hopefully the rest of QLD floded towns continues to get the right assistance- the media have been going off over Brisbane now as its the biggest city, yet the worst flooding events and catastrophes have occurred in places like The lockyer Valley, Emerald, Condomine etc...those places are in bad shape and had large scale running water causing damage

I am actually working on that phone line, and we take calls claiming for:

Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment

Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment (AGDRP) Payments of $1,000 per eligible adult and $400 per eligible child will be made if:
a person was seriously injured, or
a person is the immediate family member of an Australian killed as a direct result of the disaster, or
a person’s principal place of residence has been destroyed, or
a person’s principal place of residence has sustained major damage, or
a person is unable to gain access to their principal place of residence for a period of 24 hours or more, or
a person is stranded in their principal place of residence for a period of 24 hours or more, or
a person's principal place of residence was without electricity, water, gas, sewerage services or another essential service for at least 48 hours (a utility failure) and the utility failure was caused by damage to public or private infrastructure, or
a person is a principal carer of a dependent child who has experienced any of the above.

Eligibility A claimant will be eligible for the Disaster Income Recovery Subsidy where he/she:
derives an income from an area affected by the disaster or resides in an area affected by the disaster; and
Is 16 years of age, or older, and is not a dependent child;
Is either an Australian resident and living in Australia for the period he/she is receipt of the Subsidy; or a foreign national, living or working in Australia at the time of the disaster and for the period of time he/she is in receipt of the Subsidy;
Has experienced a loss of income as a direct result of the disaster and can show evidence supporting this within 28 days; and
Is not currently (at the time of lodgement) receiving another income support payment or pension (such as Age Pension, Newstart Allowance, service pension from the Department of Veterans’ Affairs, or Exceptional Circumstances Income Relief Payment); and
Where a member of a couple, the claimant must qualify in their own right.
