Seatbelts are obviously a safety feature of cars and save lives.
Not only are they available but they are also compulsory and fines apply for non compliance But what about motorbikes? People riding around just hanging onto someones waste? The rider with no restrainment? If you hit something in your car at 50km/h in your car with no seatbelt vs if you hit something at the same speed on a motorbike who is better off? But if the car driver does not have his seat belt on its a fine? Should motorbike riders require additional safety or should they back off car drivers? If someone drove around in a ute with someone on the back just holding on would they get fined? |

Better to come away from the bike, rather than be strapped onto it and get stuck underneath while it slides. Seat belts protect occupants from the car itself - hitting the inside of the car, other passengers etc which is highly likely when not restrained. The frame of the car provides protection as well from external forces, so securing occupants inside would be best in most, if not all cases - the motorcycle does not.
If the bike falls, then the initial blow of hitting the ground has already occurred and sliding with 100-200kg of bike on your leg won't be too good either. If the bike stops sliding and starts flipping end over end, you don't want to be near it.

You obviously dont ride a bike.......
It's better to let the bike "go" than try & save it. It's usually in the act of trying to save it that the most injuries occur. It's mire dangerous to be strapped on it than able to come off. Plus you would mount the seatbelt gear where???

Don't often see car drivers in a helmet with full leathers and body armour either.
*Why did I even post in this thread, it's comparing apples with the big banana. |

What a ridiculous question.
I've never really thought about it but as soon as I picked up the general idea of what you were saying, I instantly thought "so that you're not trapped on the bike should it fall or go haywire" - exactly what other people already answered. Next.

Thats why riders get fined for not wearing a helmet and here I see billbored all the time telling riders to wear the correct safty gear............. If you are really concerned maybe you should be asking these questions
why dont horse riders have seat belts? why dont cyclists have seat belts? And I know here in vic you get fined for people being in the back of your ute.

I suppose the next thread will be titled:
"Why don't motorbikes have a front numberplate?" And the ensuing points of how "it would be better to identify riders & bikes during police chases, & speed camera flashes. & why do we in oz have front plates on cars when America it's not mandatory to run a front plate" You really need to think about subjects before posting as aposed to taking up bandwidth with another mod & member-frustrating thread. Hopefully I saved on with the numberplate question.

I do agree that bikes should be made safer ... have a 5 star rating and follow what car manufacturers are doing at the moment.
The list of things that can be improved for a motor bike rider are staggering and cannot see why these are not mandatory ..... Seat belts, airbags (minimum front), head bolster for driver and passenger, Screen at the front for protection from foreign objects, roll bar or at least a roof to protect in case of roll over, steel side protection, an extra 2 wheels for stability ....... then we could call it a Corolla and sell millions!!!!

Fair enough
My point is around booking people in cars for belts.. When bike riders are in far more risk of injury |

When we ride, we are at far more risk of injury, due to not having 1.5 tons of steel, glass, plastic, crumple zones, & airbags around us. & one simple belt is going to do what??? Simple really... It be a good idea to book people for wearing just a shirt/singlet, thongs & shorts.

Isnt safety the individuals problem rather than having to make it compulsory? If someone whacks into you and they do not have a seatbelt there is no additional risk to you For the record i always wear my seat belt as my aurion chime if your not wearing it is super annoying |

Tell me Hulk, if you think seat belts are required on a bike, have you wondered why Stoner, Rossi and Co. dont go over the bars everytime they brake from 300kph down to nothing at every turn?
