I didnt use it I was just using the charts as a comparison on 140w oils.

Im running the 75w90 Redline and so far is giving me better results than the 140w Penrite.

Sprint Auto Parts at Enfield are pretty good with prices and is where I get my oils from.They are prepared to get it if they dont stock it asap all of the time,I usually deal with Damo down their lol.

I use this in my Supercharged VX Commodore and is good value in price and performance,combined with the Ford sturaco additive(From Ford).

Go the sin80 or Redline 75w90.

The cheapest but by no means a bad option is to use the Castrol safxa that Austin stated above.Ill be going back to that in my VX.

SAE 75w140 is Synthetic

SAE 85w140 is mineral

The above is the minimum requirement for diffs, it's not negoatable!

Anything lighter and you risk damage.

Some oils need the LSD anti chatter additive (not Mainlube)

You have to be careful with SAE ratings, they tend to lie a little,

an exaple:

SAE 50 engine oil is 220 cSt@40C
SAE 90 gear oil is 220 cSt@40C (both these are correct)

80w90 is a gearbox oil and is 150 cSt@40C which = SAE 40 engine oil

So ... sorry, 80w90 is too thin for diffs at any level.

nulon lsx90 with a ford motorsport additive(not the crap ford here sells),this was what was recomended to me by the guys who did my diff. considering they look after the local taxi fleet I'd say they've tried enough things to know what works.

IMO comparing the stunning high performance vehicles on this forum with taxis is not something I would do.

Taxis on gas would have noticeably different performance figures.

At my old workplace we ran/run the field service Hiluxs on Shell LS90 some nearing 500,000km from the mid 1990s.
You'll find Volvo (trucks), and Hino recommend a 90 weight in their rear axles.
If 80/90 weight is a recipe for disaster why do companies sell it for diffs, while some manufacturers recommend it? (genuine question).

I know you'll find this hard to believe (our customers certainly don't)

We have more up to date, proven Technology (because of Filtergram) Unfortunately with out Filtergram, they will take quite a few years to catch up and believe.

People recommend 80w90 for diff because they blatantly don't know about viscosities. (the difference between engine and gear oil viscosities)

These comments are not to cause arguments here however, sometimes there is no other reason.

Just run an 80w90 in your diff for 6 months then give me a sample and I'll prove it!

Hino trucks are one we have already proven this with, garbage trucks with stop start pressure causing failing diffs with 80w90, this was fixed with straight SAE 140 (or 460 cSt@40C)

as a truck mechanic for volvo trucks, and its somthing we dont do, diff oil and gearbox oil should be chosen based on what the trucks jobs are. an interstate truck will have less wear on the diff then a stop start truck like a garbo truck as Mainlube said.

and i hino will 99% of the time carry a lot less weight then most volvos. hinos are a small truck, the load wont be as heavy.

Sorry I should have said that Volvo specify a 90 weight as well as 85w-140 for their diffs. I personally have never used 90 weight in truck diffs, true that the small Hinos don't carry as much weight but their diffs aren't as heavy built, even their larger stuff compared to Meritor. On the other hand Isuzu specify 85 140 in everything. I'm a mech at KW and DAF and we also use 85 140 in everything (don;t even stock 90 weight gear oil) but I did take interest in Mainlubes comments conflicting with some manufacturers specs.

yea but i have always wondered about the manufacturers specs.

it all comes down to how you drive your car/truck and what it is used for, but i would think 90 weight is too thin myself. but thats for my driving style

this awesome town of whyalla doesnt have SIN80 :(

called a shop and he suggest some fully synthetic castrol stuff called 85w140.

supercrap auto stock SAF-XA so i think i'll just get that. and hopefully my diff will stop whining.

Super crap had 1 bottle of SAF-XA. So went to the other place and the stuff was actually SAF-XA. So I've put it in. Sounds a bit quieter. I think my diff needs some money spent on it. And maybe a trans oil change as well. Although I think when funds permit i'd put mainlube in for peace of mind.

Don't sweat the brand Daymow, as long as you put in the correct fluid for the right application you should be fine on a standard diff.

but i used SAF-XA as said and didn't put an additive in. castrol says not to. but handbook says to.
so i was thinking i would but will that ruin lubricating properties? anyone shed any light on it.

Bringing up an old thread but I got 3.9 LSD diff in my au and it whines at 80 but could be trans? Haha what diff oil should I use it's cheap and It might make a diffrence

Nulon 85/140 the blue stuff,well it used to be blue,the last bottle i got had gold coloured oil in it and seemed a bit thinner.
Its like glue and can quieten down a noisy diff, best to leave it in the sun before you try and fill it though.
