2000-2002 AU2/AU3 Falcon XR6 Tickford or Fairmont Ghia

Why? Because i really like the look of them and they go like the clappers.

EF or EL xr8. Great cars, bulletproof, V8 rumble and look amazing.

I bought an EB XR8 with exhaust, lowered, and a few other mods for $2500. I own far more expensive cars but still prefer to jump in this thing everyday. Its slow but sounds awesome and handles pretty well for what it is.

Like many posters in this thread, I'd also choose a clean mid-high series AU (perhaps a Fairlane). Even though you can get a BA XT for that price, it would probably be rough.

Today.. ummm, I'd probably try to find an EF Fairmont owned by a retired couple - original owners, probably using it twice a week for shopping.

As a daily car, I'd probably have it lowered to eliminate that gap between arch and tyre and leave the car as it is.

a white EL Fairmont Ghia for me. Why - I use to own one and without a doubt - it was the best family car we have ever owned! I bought it in 1999 for $21,000 (with only 19,000km on the clock) - it was sold brand new 6 months before for over $52,000! We put 230,000km on it and it never once let us down. My first child was even conceived in the back seat lol.

Au, fairmont, non ghia.
GREAT fuel economy, indestructible, and cheap as chips to fix.

Can easily say EL fairmont ghia with the V8 or tickford 6 would be a great and reliable car. They are brilliant car on the highway and in town. Either that or get a cheap ba from the auctions and fix it up if your handy with panel work.

I'd go out in the country to look for straight body clean early E-series. Pull out the boat anchor in the engine bay, and install a late model Barra i6 or even an i6T.

EL Fairmont Ghia V8

Why? Because they look great slammed on GTP's and they're a nice to drive, luxurious car.

Mid/high series AUII-III on gas. You won't find a cheaper to run or more reliable ride with that much space and comfort for the money.

Im not sure $5000 buys a good condition au or ba. dont want a car with 1 million km.

But a good e series. Personally I grabbed a dl2 LTD with 76000km 5.0 for $5500 6 months ago. All it has needed is a new radiator and window regulator (basically consumables) Mint condition car. Leather like new as is paint and motor, it was a privately owned ltd. a true grandpa. Ok so its over the $5000 limit per the op but awesome car. Better than most cars $15000 and over. Now has 87000km and no signs of any issues. perfect.

Get a grandpa el ghia, fairlane/LTD 4.0 or 5.0 or for under $5000. I think something under 150000km can be had. Otherwise a el xr6 or 8.

I think most of us have the right Idea, I had an EL fairmont ghia on GTP's now I have a manual AU XR6 series 2.

Both excellent cars for the money (5k give or take)

I would find the best condition EF or EL Fairmont I could find. I did the exact same thing a couple of years ago but ended up settling for a Futura instead because most of the ones for sale these days are high km pigs. It would make more sense to buy a TE or later model Magna for the same money though.
