Hey guys.
Just asking a question. I just got done another $206 for no P plate on the car, I got done before christmas and lost 2 points, P platers have 4. The first time I admit I knew I didn't have one. Now, I got done this morning coming back from a small town picking up my girl. He asked why I had no p plate, and I told him the truth. The town I went to is one of the worst towns going, I had one on there and it was stolen, and there is NO shop nore the police station open in this town as its small. Anyway, he gave me $206 fine and 3 points. Does this mean I will get a letter in the mail with loss of liscense, 2 points before christmas, and 3 today? seems to me I will. |

Yes.
My advice, make sure you get the letter. You may be able to dodge a conviction at court in relation to "not knowing" stating you did not receive the letter. However your insurance will not give a toss and secondly the Police officer may also not care. If you get done and convicted at court you will be court disqualified. This is a whole other mess to deal with as once the disqualified ball starts rolling it can be a real problem. May still be able to make application for probationary licence. Just call Manager driver licensing in your state to enquire.

You've lost 5 points total, so yes, you're going to be a pedestrian for awhile.

Sounds to me like it's gone. Best thing to do is get the number plate attachment for the p plate. Doesn't look great but p plates are there for a reason

Ok. Being a P Plater you will be off the road regardless of any outcome.
You can go to court and try and fight it and you may be able to get off lightly if you have a genuine reason for needing your license, such as to get to work. Also being in a rural area im guessing there isn't much public transport. Elect to do the driver offenders program and you may find that they will put you off the road for a significantly less time. So as soon as the fine arrives, don't pay, go to the local court house and book in a date. These are two minor infringements so they may go easy on you. |

I'm from Vic so not exactly sure how it works in NSW, but if you've lost more points then you have then you are in a world of hurt.
Who even steals a P plate? |

You'll be walking for 3 months - then back on P's. I wouldn't worry about trying to get out of it with a letter - as the driver, you are responsible to ensure that your P's a are attached/dispayed before using the vehicle (ie do a quick visual before you drive).

Stupid question, but why can't you put the P-Plates inside the car and attach them high on the inside of the window. Seems a simple solution.

The RTA made that illegal as of July 1, 2007. Apparently it was too easy to obscure them when they were inside the vehicle.

Mate you can only take a matter to Court if you have a defence. Even if the plates were stolen, they weren't there, the cop has probably heard that excuse before (I'm not doubting what you say for one second).
The Magistrate or prosecutor will ask you, ""Were your P plate up", "Answer, no it got stolen", bang convicted. My only suggestion is if you are under 18, try for a juvenile caution, ask the Court to dismiss it as a first offence (that is a first offence in Court), see the duty lawyer at Court on the day, ring your local Youth Legal services branch for advice. I did this with my 17 year old daughter who got done for 11 kays over the limit, double demerit points weekend, she would have lost her license. Magistrate kicked it down to Juvenile Justice Team where she made a donation to a charity and no conviction recorded and kept her license. This is your one and only Get out of Jail Card. Good luck.

When I was on my P's back in the day, an officer actually witnessed someone pull the P plate off my car. A few minutes later I got in it and drove away - not knowing. He pulled me up and booked me for not displaying the plate, advising me that I should check every time I get in the car. |

That's the thing, I actually knew I had no P plate, I said this to the cop the second he spoke to me.
I said I had no P plate, and it wasn't on there this morning, it was screwed on and was obviously ripped off as only half plate was there, and NO WHERE in this town was open to get one, the police station isn't even 24/7 to get them from. |

That is the value of them... If you have magnetic ones... the whole rational behind those is that they are easy to apply and remove, so why leave them on the car all day un-attended? To someone else who has just realised they have lost one they have just scored your $200 worth of P plates.... And... lets take the 'real' value of the magnetic plate? What are they worth? $10 a pair. Why wouldn't you remove them? You wouldn't leave a $10 note stuck to your duco with a fridge magnet... you know how 'society' is, if it ain't bolted down and worth a few bob it will soon be gone. When I had my P's, not only did I use the dagy steel plate holders, I also cable tied the mongrels in. I also kept a spare set in the car..... To some, showing plates is a choir... I displayed them with pride as it was like a rite of passage to my full licence. To the OP. You have already been told by several members that you may be walking for a while, and I agree. Perhaps when you get them back do what I did above to 'fine proof' your car! Good luck.

It's 2 points, not 3. The officer can't decide how many points you get.
I'm assuming you are a red P Plater to have only 4 points. When do you get your greens? If it's within the next few months, hold off on paying the fine -file a request for a review just before the reminder notice has lapsed which will freeze everything, then if/when it comes back, wait until you get an enforcement order. There's an easy few months in that. Alternately fight it. It's a public holiday - shops aren't open. A mate of mine got off a P plate fine in NSW because it occurred on a public holiday making it difficult to get a P plate. |
