Nudge Bars for city based cars?

Hi all,

Could you all please help me understand why people put nudge bars on cars that are mainly driven around the city. I am curious to know why and how they are a good idea. What benefits etc

I friend of mine put one on his brand new Mitsubishi Lancer that is only ever driven in town. I asked him why and his response was "it protects the front of the car from impacts". My response to this is yeah and if the nudge bar is damaged then you still have the cost of replacing it and its probably likely that the bumper etc still will get damaged too.

Can you all provide some views on this please.

Yeah,the mounts are pretty ordinary on an FG ( 4mm flat plate ) and if there is any sideways force,they will just fold,but I have hit a decent sized grey kangaroo with mine and luckily all came off well after the incident.A nudge bar doesn't protect more than 50% of the front area.BUT,IMHO,they look awesome ( unfortunately,my new ride,XR6 T can't fit one-intercooler )

PS both of my vehicles are UTES,I can't even imagine one on a city based sedan.UGLY !

I guess that's why they're called NUDGE bars.

Waste of time! the mounts are generally flimsy and don't really save anything as it'll just bend back and hit the bumper anyway.
Bullbars aren't a great deal different. These days they have to SRS compliant so they will fold and buckle quite easily so the systems operate correctly. In many cases they cause more damage than without as they bend and hit things that normally wouldn't get damaged.

Nudge Bars look alright on the right vehicle, and serve some kind of purpose like looks, minor protection or somewhere to mount accessories.
My pet peeve is side steps on soft roaders that are the same ride height as sedans.

I always had them on my work cars to fit spotlights and UHF brackets. They also usually protect the cooling system in the event of light frontal impact e.g. A wallaby etc.

Yup, that's all mine was used for, putting a pair of spotties on.

people prob put them on for the same reason mums decide they need a massive gleaming white 4wd thats never seen sand let alone dirt or off road to drop the kids off at school.....because they somehow feel safer

All the rage in the 80s, almost every car had them. Dont see themmuch now except on utes and vans

in the late 80's the Nissan dealer fitted these to every private vehicle sold.
proportional to the rise in shopping centers.

In the 90's the plastic bumper on cars and bull bar on patrol, with winch mounting bars for commercial vehicles. led to the poor bulbar rules we are about to start policing from this year--Tis wat Dah Dun sent my notis for crissy.

If you want a bullbar-buy a car that came with bill of fitment before 1964.Or came with a pile of family holiday snaps.

With 20 years experience in the 4wd industry I can tell you categorically that nudge bars offer zero protection from impacts. They're made from thin alloy tube with thin alloy brackets- they have to be so they can demonstrate zero interference with the airbags. A swift kick will bend them. Animal strike? Your dreaming.
They're handy for light weight lights, aerials etc.
the other advantage is people will give you a little more parking clearance, and if they're visible, less spacially aware drivers can see where their car ends.

The foam filled plastic bumper offers more protection.

I've got a TJM bar on my AU XR8, the mounts are 6mm and there is 2 plates each side with about 8 bolts in each side to the front cross member support, the alloy tube is also fairly thick, I use it for mounting a pair of HID spotlights but Ive also hit some pretty heavy duty stuff with it and it's been rock solid

As above, they're only good for mounting lights on and touch parking.

I remember them, don't think they were UV stabilised either so ended up brittle and just crumbled away

Its really up to the owner of the vehicle if they want to fit a nudge bar. Who cares its not hurting anyone
