I wanna get back to flying again, was training when i was younger in both gliders and GA (general aviation) aircraft, ran out of time and money (mainly money lol). Gliding costs aren't so bad but GA is now well over $100 an hour to hire a small piper or cessna, and that's just solo, without an instructing pilot. For those who haven't tried and would like to experience pure flight, go book yourself a glider joyflight, you won't regret it.

Now, back to the car :\

A glider = no engine, no ejection seat. Forget it!

I used to know a gliding instructor who took me out for a few flights around baccus marsh area. It is INCREADABLE!!! I loved it. The first loop in a glider is something I will NEVER forget. I must do it again one day.

anyhow, for those that have never seen it.. this is boeing landing gear testing.. just sensational!

not crosswinds.. thats how they test the landing gear. They were doing it deliberatly.. which is even more mental!!!

Yep i flew a couple of times at baccus too, just talking about it is making me want to get back into it actually.

Gotta love test pilots, balls of steel ;p

Thats awesome piloting skill to land them like that..... from a piloting point of view, it would be easier to land it if there actually WAS A cross wind...!

No way, landing in crosswind anit good at all cause you dont know which way the plane will go, especially if it is a strong cross wind. I was out at Melbourne Airport this afternoon and there were a few planes coming in and they were swaying all over the place on final appraoch.

Of course crosswinds were always contributing to the fun when performing the "Checkerboard" approach into Kai Tak's infamous RWY 13. (Bad luck number or what?)

You'd commence the approach with a tailwind, flying along the base of a mountain range, which of course produces a tumbling effect on the movement of the air. So things get a little choppy as you commence that symbolic right hand turn over the playing fields near Checkerboard Hill.

As you turn that tailwind becomes a slight headwind and also a crosswind. That leaves you with little time to correct with the aeroplane moving around a bit as well.

Actually there wasn't a great deal lot of crosswind on that one.

Always good to see more people interested in Aviation. My old man used to be in the Air Force and then went into Australian Airlines before it went bust back in the early 90's.
Always good to hear the storys about what it was like. Also a good mate of mine works at Melbourne Airport so i hear a few things off him aswell.

True, if the crosswind exceeds the demonstrated max crosswind for your type then you go somewhere else (or crash)

A few years ago I was departing from Maroochydore in a Seneca but aborted because the crosswing on both runways was over 22 kts (Seneca's max 13), I tried later in an Arrow (18kt max) hoping that there might be a short lull so I could launch. 2 hours later I gave up and DROVE to Airlie Beach (1000km).
As I was leaving the airport I saw a Bell 43 lift off and head west. I thought that was a bit brave.
The helicopter pilot's name was Graeme (Shirley) Straun and he did not come back......
