Default Uniden vs GME

Hey all!

After having an in car oricom for a year and a bit it has just about given up. It's seen some vicious corrugations and plenty of dust and whatnot. It doesn't send or receive much at all anymore. So needless to say it's due for replacement.

A lot of my friends run GME, and I'm very impressed with their performance. For UHF it has the best send and receive I've come across. I've been running budget Oricom for years now and this is the only time I've kept a unit for more than a year (and it's died) but my signal has always been overpowered by those running a GME.

So, to the point. GME is not cheap. Uniden look like they have great units similar to GME but cheaper. I used to have a 2w handheld uniden when I lived in Sydney that picked up transmissions all over town and I loved it.

How do Uniden UHF radios compare to GME? The people I know either run GME or Oricom so can't ask anyone first hand !

you said it yourself, they are cheaper and nastier, the sound receive quality is more tinny, look at 99.9% of trucks and they run GME radios, antennas, speakers, ive got GMEs that are 15 years old and work like they are new

ive got unidens that are 15 years old and still going the goods in my 4wd's bout to move one out of an old 4wd and in to my new Awd
also have a 5w hand held uniden that's around 6 or so years old , they do the job good enough for my 4wd purposes and are smaller than the gme's
but yes I am a road train driver and in the truck I want a longer distance talking to others where possible and in them we run the gme's

I've used the Uniden UH7760NBand UH7700NBin the last few vehicles mostly because their size allows for easy fitment in late models that don't provide much room. They have proven capable of handling rough conditions but (in general) their range is poor compared to some others even using a tuned 6db gain antenna.

Cheers

Well all the earthworks mobs in in the south west use the gme radios, including the hire mobs like coats and onsite ect.
The great thing about them is there easily taken out at the end of the day, no annoying screws to take out.
I also went an bought a new: https://www.gme.net.au/catalogue/dis...nd/tx3500.aspx
I have seen a cheaper compact uniden and its a pain in the but to undo and the interface is difficult to use.

Can't beat GME for quality, I had a set of GME handhelds for about 5 years that I was super rough with, always dropping them in the dirt and mud, etc. In the end one of them ended up of the floor of a 4WD that got filled with water which was enough to kill it, the other still works. I also have one of these https://www.gme.net.au/catalogue/fix...s/tx3120s.aspx with a GME aerial, no complaints at this stage.

GME are made here.
Oricom & Uniden are Asian, and not very reliable.

“Actually it was just call “Gull”, because I named it that. Because we knew it was going to poo on everything”.

In my opinion GME & Uniden are equal with quality & reliability, comes down to personal choice & how much you want to spend.

Interesting comments... All very valuable.
I need no more convincing. UHF range is low to start with, if GME has the best internals to give me clarity and range (and longevity) then it's definitely worth the extra $$..

Never knew how long my Oricom would last, but being Korean made, I was not surprised it's time is up haha.

Thanks everyone!

Unreal.. Yes I've seen old GME units that still outperform some radios haha.

Will be getting a GME antenna with new coax too on a new mount.

Gadgetcity.com has great deals I've been eyeing off. I think my Oricom pack came from them.
