Default Bizzare connection problem

Ok this one has me stuffed

I have adsl, and my connection is fine until I open limewire. The only change is that I am using Limewire pro 4.10. Previous to this issue I was using 4.3 had had no problems.

So now when I have pro open it stuffs my connection up. My modem doesn't drop out but it will make my browser time out every minute or so, and Limewire will start downloading fine, but after 2 minutes it will drop out completely and say there is no connection...

WTF....im going to be pis.sed if I cant use Limewire anymore, because it might be hard to find the old version.

So now that Ive closed Limewire everything is fine. I dont understanf how that program can effect everything else.

Any ideas? I dont want to use Kazaa as its full of crap, and torrents are no good because whenever I try and forward a port it kills my connection completely.

Its a Netcomm NB3 if that makes any difference.

Thanks guys, this is a weird one I know. out:

could be a firmware issue with the modem.

I remember back when I had ISDN. Using that with file sharing programs caused my net to drop out. Firmware upgrade fixed it. Would be wierd though if it worked with your old version of limewire. But who knows, maye the new version plays around a bit.

Open up limewire, and when ytour net is dead. click on start/run, type in CMD or command and hit enter. type, ping www.yourisp.com being your isps home page. If you get packets sent 4, packets received 4, your connection to the net is fine. Its a software issue and some conflict with something on your pc.

No spyware/virus I assume? I had a similar problem cept it would go on the net ok after 5 mins of the computer on, then it would drop out after a bit of incoming modem activity.

Did a spyware and virus check and a virus playing around with the network packets being sent recieved.

You should check your Limewire settings, look for upload bandwidth. If the upload rate is too high it will affect your browsing, as your browser has to send a request to download files. If it can't send a request it will time out.

Hope this helps.

It could be one of a few things,
1. too many download/uploads running

2. too many connection attempts which would be case if your running Windows XP Service Pack 2 which follows on from point 1

3. your outstriping your bandwidth.

Try having a play with your bandwidth settings and download/upload slots. Id also look at the Service Pack 2 issue in XP. By default its set to 10 max, anymore and it resets.

Some info here, and a patcher so you can change it from 10 to whatever you decide.

Just slightly off topic, but do you guys run virus protection with firefox when using limewire?
Another member here told me not to worry about it, but just not convinced..

I wouldnt dream of NOT running some form of virus protection using any sort of browser. Then again, Nortons has been pretty good, never been hit with any sort of virus. Its always picked it up.

always run anti virus programs.

Whoever told you not to because you have firefox. Well, lets just say they should hand their pc back and appologise for buying it.

Thanks guys...Ill play with the upload settings in a sec...

347 - I heard firefox is very good for spyware and stuff, but you still need something for virus.

I just downloaded NOD32, a mate told me about it, its awesome.

firefox is just a browser. limewire has nothing to do with firefox. thus firefox offers no protection at all from limewire, or email etc etc

I'd say that you're having problems with the port settings within your firewall.

I've seen limewire stuff a number of people around... I show them Shareazza

If your running Nortons firewall make sure it's a trusted program and that it has access to all ports... also make sure you limit the upload bandwidth to 50% of your max.

As for nil firewall and anti virus... would you leave your keys in the ignition running at the shop with a sign on it saying back in 10 minutes... that's what your doing on an ADSL connection without Firewall and Anti virus software.

Firefox is more secure than IE (M$) mainly because more people like to find exploits in M$ products.... It's an IT thing.

Is your interenet provider Netspace? Cause they give out these CR@P NB3 modems. Is it a USB modem? cause if it is, then that is probably the case. I went to school with on of the tech support blokes there and he told me (yes I also am with netspace) that they are crap and they have LOADS of problems with them.

AS for not running antivirus with firefox, that's like meeting a bird at a classy pub and assuming that cause it was a classy pub you don't need to tarp up when you get back to hers if you know what I mean.

Bearshare is full of spyware and adware. Kazaa lite is ИИИИ. I use limewire pro now worries. Pro has no spyware and adware. Shareaza works well for torrents
