Anyone here about that accident today at bargo? I was on a train from picton when someone who seen it on the way started telling someone else. Apparently, an old guy had been pulled over by 2 cops. A tow truck was also there, the old man was driving a mini-truck. A semi-trailer came up from behind, smashed into the back of the truck, the 2 cops dived over the barrier and ran away, while the old guy, the tow truck, the paddy wagon and the mini truck all got f'ing smashed to bits. The truck went through the barrier and into the bush.

Hate to be the driver of that truck. Poor old dude, he was 72.

The old guy had run his truck into the guard rail, and all of them were standing around discussing how to get the truck off the rail, as it was stuck.

They saw the semi coming and all ran like hell, but the old man was too slow.

The tow truck that was called to remove the first truck, and which was destroyed by the semi, belongs to my cousin, who was standing there at the time.

Just got off the phone with my cousin, who told me the whole story.

The police cars parked around the truck stuck on the guard rail did NOT have their lights on, and when the driver of the B-double did finally notice the cars, he had another semi beside him.
He tried flashing him and signalling him to move over so he could avoid the police cars, but the other driver didn't notice anything was amiss, and didn't move.

Once the B-double hit the first car, it was out of control, and the four police officers and Michael ran like hell into the bushes.

Michael was the first one to emerge after everything stopped, and paniced when he couldn't see or hear anyone else, but then he saw a young police officer sit on the guard rail, and burst into tears.
He made a call on the radio that the accident was now a fatal, and that the tow truck driver had been killed.
(My uncle, who is also in heavy vehicle tow trucks has a scanner which he keeps near his bed at night, heard the call, knew his son was there, and well you can imagine the rest...)
On seeing Michael, the officer who made the call stood up, asked if he was ok, and gave him a fierce hug.
The rest of the police officers appeared and discovered the body of the old man next to the tow truck.

They headed over to the B-double, opened the passenger side door, and got the driver out, who was asking what had happened, and in my cousin's typical tactless style he told him he'd just killed a man.

Accident investigation have pulled the computer from the truck, found he was doing 102 (which is allowable), and on investigating the load he had 8 tonnes of Toyota sheet metal.

Michael knew his father would have heard the call on the scanner that the towie had been killed, so he wanted to let him know that he was ok, but he was in such a state of shock that he couldn't dial any numbers.
When he finally did, his father was already in his own truck on the way there.

Michael's 4 month old custom built tow truck is a write off, the B-double went up the tray 2 metres and off the side, twisting the chassis.

Sorry it's a bit long winded, but since I haven't read a report on it that didn't get something wrong, I thought I'd add this.

damn feathers, very lucky there werent more fatalities by the sounds of it. glad to hear your cousin's ok (whilst condolances go to the family of the man killed...)

Sorry it happened but glad Michael is ok.

Life's short, you just don't realise until it's too late.

Hope he's having time off to recouperate.

Mother nature sure knows how to shuffle the deck. Its always a dangerous situation, yet it still stuns you to hear about it. Stuff being there.

The old man had terminal prostate cancer.
Maybe a blessing in disguise since he was killed instantly?
