Default AU airbox

Hey all i eventually want to purchase a g&d airbox one day soon but just saving some funds, just wanna know if i cut the whole section out off the std air box cause i have a spare would this help. im not gonna make a small one like 60mm or anything i wanna cut out as much off the front and the side next to guard as i can. heat isnt an issue as the headers are hpc coated and the whole intake right from the snorkel mouth right to the lower intake manifold stay about 20deg. what a diff hpc can make.

Yep, thats what I've done too, although I got rid of the snorkel alltogether.

The sound is much better IMO ;)

Not real sure if there is much performance improvement though?

or is it totally different?(au to ba box and mounting points)
it goes from box to behind headlight

id like mine to be more noisey
i have a K&N panel filter in mine

i think it does fit in but i have been told buy the dude that was selling them on ebay from ford that guys who were buying them for au's have to shorten them a bit to fit behind lights, now i dunno but could try, being such a small opening i think just removing all that plastic will be better and noisier.

All ive done to mine is cut a hole in the front, enough to fit a ba rubber snorkel, draws in air from right behind the lights, and still runs my factory tickford snorkel.

I've got a 80mm pipe stuck to the front of my airbox, with 75mm flexi-tube going from the 80mm pipe & then between the radiator and grille, so it picks up the nice cold air coming in through the grille (basically about 1 foot below the standard snorkel). I also have the SS inductions bigmouth snorkel - I know they're a rip off, but I got it for $100 second hand (but brand new). This is all only on the 6, and it sounds great, and throttle response is heaps better.

I pretty much got the same setup too , 2x 90mm flexi-tube pipes from the front of the airbox to behind the grill to intake the cold air , i originally had them sucking from behind the headlight , worked well except of a night with the lights on the airbox got a tadd warm .

I did a similar thing before I had the G&D airbox, bit of placky pipe feeding into the box behind the lights. The improvement was 95% mental, 5% throttle response. As for the G&D one... well... according to my dyno runs, I picked up 5rwkw - I would attribute 40% of that gain to a better quality air filter (K&N pod), 60% to the excellent design (not to mention quality) of the G&D box.

Default xr8ute's FREE airbox mod

Firstly I cut away some of the headlight support to encourage more cold air into the area in front of the airbox.

Then I cut two holes in the front of the airbox and fitted these radiused inlets that I found in the plumbing section of Bunnings. Sound was much better, performance inconclusive.

Then a week before I ran my current PB, I completely cut the front off the airbox. Sound is muuuuuuch better again, performance still inconclusive.

You've just converted it from a CAI to HAI. But if it works, go with it.

hey all i have been out doing pretty much the same as xr8ute except i kept the snorkel and i must say i neva realised how quiet my intake was now it sounds like i have a monster stuck under my bonnet, you can really tell the diff i still have a smile on my face i always thought my xr8 was missing a few tones. but on the downside i chewed up quarter of a tank in about 30 mins. but response is excellant should have sounded like that from factory.

I respectfully disagree, but thats just my opinion. I've hardly done any temp measurements to confirm my theory...lol

To be fair though, that airbox mod was more concerned with getting an adequate volume of air into the airbox than ensuring the coldest possible intake air temp.

It certainly didn't hurt my ET or trap speed ;)

Okay, maybe not HAI, but certainly WBPAI (Warm But plentiful Air Induction). Like I said, whatever works.
