So much for Toyota's vaunted reputation for quality. On July 18, the Japanese auto giant announced a recall of 418,570 vehicles worldwide for faulty engine parts. This follows an even larger global recall of nearly one million cars and trucks at the end of May for faulty parts that could cause drivers to lose control of the steering wheel.


The current recall affects about 150,000 cars sold outside of Japan, mainly in the U.S. and Canada, though no accidents have been reported due to the faulty engine component that could lead to oil leakage. In the U.S. more than 34,000 cars were recalled, including 26,200 Echo and 8,500 Prius models. While Toyota is no stranger to recalls -- in May 2005 it recalled more than 750,000 pickup trucks and every single 2006 Toyota model line from the Avalon to the Tundra has experienced some form of recall -- this latest round may finally dent its Teflon image if steps aren't taken to improve quality.

The high induced by the new car smell may indeed be increasingly undercut as recalls make headlines industrywide. Auto recalls can affect components of every type, from those as seemingly insignificant as tail-light bulbs to more considerable components, like those that led to the now infamous Ford-Firestone tire scandal. And 2006 has seen its share of high-profile recalls for both foreign and domestic auto companies.


Last week, Nissan announced a recall of Altimas and Sentras affecting 96,800 vehicles that were susceptible to engine fires due to excessive oil consumption. Up to 24 fires have been reported to the company.





In May, 31,000 units of the Chevrolet Corvette were recalled by General Motors, because there was mounting evidence that some roofs could come unglued at high speeds.


Many recalls are preemptive, announced by the maker for unrealized but potentially disastrous consequences. Last month, for instance, Ford Motor's Volvo division recalled 109,000 XC90 SUVs after engineers detected loosening ball-joints in the steering mechanism that could possibly break and make steering more difficult. However, no crashes or injuries had been reported.

And they will continue to have a high reputation. All this shows is that nobody is perfect. Where it all goes wrong is when you keep getting it wrong.Then you start to get worried about the product.

Thankfully they realised there was a problem with something before something major went on...

Japan doesnt have anywhere near the civil compensation laws that the US has, hence why the Japs arnt too concerned about the recall of their cars when it involves potential life threatening failures.

As we know in the US you can sue for just about anything and alot of the time their cars are recalled for extreme trivial matters.

The recalls come after police investigated three Toyota officials on suspicion of professional negligence in allegedly shirking recalls for eight years and not fixing a defect that may have caused an accident.

Five people were injured in a crash in 2004 in southern Japan when steering failed in a 1993 Toyota Hilux Surf sport utility vehicle, causing it to swing out of control. Toyota had received five reports of problems with the steering by 1996, but no recall was made until 2004, the company said.

I have two thoughts on this??? Like they stuffed up!!! Then ??? Well atleast they are doing something about it!!!! I bet there's other little faults that are fixed during services....Like earth on Rodeo fuel tanks.. Can cause fire while filling due to static elect spark....

No major recalls, but countless TSBs (Technical Service Bulletins), basically unannounced recalls for problems that are only repaired on a customer complaint basis. There are HEAPS of them.

Speak to anyone with extensive unbiased experience in the industry and they'd split their sides if you suggested Ford or Holden had similar build quality to someone such as Toyota. They do not come within cooee. Being a proud Australian I really wish they did.

I thought the outcome was also that it's been revealed that Toyota intentionally tried to hide whatever fault is being recalled. That could just be a rumour though.

Dont forget that in Seppoland a 2006 car can be released and sold around July 2005!

That article didn't say that the police were getting involved with criminal charges as one of the delayed recalls (8 years) led to a car accident where 8 people died! Also Toyota got fined a fair bit of money by the Japanese Government.
The Prius/Yaris/echo recall was for a camshaft sensor that would allow oil to leak on it and would stall the engine.

Also the Japanese have it easy when they build there cars as the operator can be brain dead and still build a good quality car as they only build one or two models and the process is the same and the parts are almost identical, let a manufacturer have to deal with the crap that Ford or Holden have to deal with when they build 4 different models where parts can vary from the same model and have to work with a small budget.

the way i see it, at least the japs are DOING SOMETHING ABOUT the issues in there cars.....
you often see people complaining about issued with ba's or commodores, but ford says pfft......

commodore.....airbags deploying whenever they feel like it.....fuel tanks catching fire in minor accidents.....

falcon (well territory) ball joints coming out....

that was only if there rear tray (pick up style) was removed and replaced with an aftermarket tray.
