hmmmm so what does this mean for current P platers with V8?? I got my P's about 2 months ago and im driving a 5.0ltr EB Fairmont, does this mean i wont be able to dive it any more??

Alot off people look badly on P platers with V8, and when theres an issue with a p plater driving a V8, the next day that issue will be all over the news.

Its just not fair, "so ALL p platers with V8 are going to smash into a tree and kill themselves"?

All im saying is those maniancs on the road going 140km in a 70km should get the punishment they deserve because they endanger life's in so many way.

My mate was involved in a crash 2 weeks ago in broadmeadows in which a 16 year old girl was killed. The guy driving had no licence, was 18, had an alcohol reading and was speeding in a R34 skyline in the wet.

Now it all comes to resposibilty. Behind the wheel of any car can be dangerous, it all depends on whose in control. To be honest i can not defend the p platers but, as a result because of others actions the rest get punished. I drive a V8 cause i have always loved the grumble that comes from an 8. All i do is just cruize and im happy to pay for fuel with money that i work hard for. For a good 4 years i saved up money to get the car i wanted and in a matter 7 months i wont be able to drive it ****** ********..............

Relax ACCORDING to ''vic roads'' IF you already have your P's and a V8 you are all clear however it does have to be registered in your name this includes turbo, supercharged cars so skyline,180sx,V6 supercharged commo's drivers etc will be fine to contiune driving thier cars the NEW VEHICLE restrictions dont come into play untill january 2008 so take a chill pill.

For those who wont fall under this bracket ie. have a V8, turbo whatever but wont get thier P's untill after the new restrictions come into place well i think your screwed however there might be a loop hole if you prove when you bought the car and you would have to have the car regoed in your name. (but dont hold me to this last bit)

It's not a life sentence. It's for the period that your on your P's. Whats that, a couple of years? Then when you get some experience on the roads you can all move up to your choice of car.

Anyway, i'm glad this stuff is happening. I'm sick of almost being cleaned up by idiots in P Plated cars who think its cool to go as fast as they want in shopping centre car parks. Now if something could only be done about their stereo's vibrating the bootlid, then the world would be a better place.

couple of years? try 4 years starting next year !! soon you won't be able to leave your house to get into your car without a police escort hah !

i'm sick off full licensed drivers driving like tools ! give us p plates a brake, it's not like full licensed drivers are any better

Bumping this as well..

I've heard that any P-Plater, even if they have their licence allready can't drive a V8 etc?

That's what it sounds like from that above statement... If so, that's complete BS.

You just leave the fully licensed drivers to police for action as required.

The VIC changes as stated earlier are only catching up to NSW, SA and QLD practice (and these are further developing). I fully expect with time similar activities in TAS, the ACT, NT and WA. Our system will almost mirror that of many an EU state.

The desire is to reduce 'exposure' P plate license holders ("the young") historically have to motor vehicle crashes, this allows them greater survivability potential and hence reduced injury potential.

p platers are not all young drivers. there is a high majority of people on there p's older then the age of 25. It depends on the maturity of the person, if some spoil brat gets a high pwered vehicle it is most likely that they will act like a hoon on the roads.

Most p platers work and appreciate there rights and as a result do not exploit that opputunity.

If there inforcing rules to lower potential dangers for p platers shouldnt they do the same for mature drivers?. Its not an attack or anything but it is as if we purposly get targeted all the time. There are many mature drivers that seem to forget the road rules to, eg. not signalling when changing lanes and going around round abouts, tailgating and just common courtesy.

Its pretty obvious that there is some debate to this issue but all mature drivers once had p's on there car to. For the mature drivers, just try to remeber what it was like when you were on your p's, but add in more rules and regulations as well as being watached continuously on the roads by police.

Ive had many "Mature aged men" in cv8's and euro sports cars get beside me and go nuts on the highway...It really annoys me due to the fact that becuase i drive a slammed eb with big wheels im a "young idiot hoon"

Its more a case of ****** ego syndrome....."ive got the more expensive , powerfull car etc etc"
They see me and feel like they need to show me up....If i was to put the foot down next to them i know exactly what theyd be thinking.....It like me trying to egg on a toyata yaris

No restrictions for P platers, including Turbo's, 8 cyl's, Blowers, the works, If you can pay for it, you can drive it. Not to mention no speed limit's *In certain area's of course*

Just a few stats on maybe why the crack-down on V8's for younger drivers

16 of my Family & friends have been killed in accidents since 1970 :-

7 were Adults , 2 = V8 drivers (6 not at fault) 4 cyl driver at fault..tried to overtake a truck ... Head on into traffic coming over a hill
9 were on "P's" 7 = V8 drivers (2 not at fault)


Daughter
12 friends killed in last 12 months

2 in one car = V8
10 on "P's" Red & Green , 8 = V8 drivers (1 not at fault)

(Hope you can understand the ratio's)

Lot's of the young guys here have V8's , and are responsible , it's just the few who give the rest a bad name . Don't get me wrong , I love my V8 XB but I just use it as a "cruiser" . I bought my race car to get "the speed thrill".

It has probably been mentioned here but I will just touch on it again incase it was missed.
But before going out and buying a XR8 I made a call to the RTA (NSW) to enquire about my missus because she was a little late getting her L's she was also late getting her P's but as the RTA told me if you check the back of your License card it will tell you the restrictions you have.
Or give your RTA a call and ask them to check it up on there system.
My missus was lucky as she had her P's before the 11 July 2005 which was when the rule was introduced.

On 11 July 2005 the NSW Government introduced two changes to the provisional licence scheme for licences issued after that date. Both changes are new initiatives to help reduce the young driver road toll. The prohibited vehicle and passenger conditions are described below.

Prohibited vehicles
The prohibited vehicle condition restricts all new provisional (P1 and P2) drivers from driving certain high performance vehicles. The scheme aims to prohibit young driver access to vehicles that are overrepresented in young driver crashes.

Prohibited vehicles are those with:

Eight or more cylinders.
A turbocharged engine (except diesel).
A supercharged engine (except diesel).
Engine performance modifications.
Certain high performance six cylinder engine vehicles or other vehicles as described in the publication Novice Drivers - High Performance Vehicle Restrictions.
The following vehicles are not prohibited vehicles and may be driven by provisional licence holders:

Suzuki Cappuccino 2D Cabriolet Turbo 3 698cc (released between 1/01/1992 - 1/12/1997).
Daihatsu Copen L880 2D Convertible Turbo 4 659cc (released from 1/10/2003).
Smart vehicles (all models).
If you are unsure whether your vehicle is prohibited or you would like more information about P1 and P2 licence conditions phone 13 22 13.

The publication Novice Drivers - High Performance Vehicle Restrictions is available to view and download from the box at the bottom of this page. This list will be updated as required.

An additional list, Guide of prohibited eight cylinder, turbo and supercharged high performance vehicles, may also be viewed and downloaded. This additional list is a guide only and subject to change at any time without notice. If your vehicle is not on the list but would otherwise be considered to be a 'prohibited vehicle', you must not drive it, unless exempt.

Guidelines for light vehicle modifications, including engine modifications, are also available to view and download at the bottom of this page (refer to Vehicle Standards Information sheet VSI 06).

Passenger condition
The passenger condition applies to provisional (P1 and P2) drivers disqualified for a driving offence that is committed on or after 11 July 2005. After the disqualification period the provisional licence holder will be restricted from carrying more than one passenger when driving. This condition will apply for 12 months.

Exemptions from the conditions
You cannot drive a prohibited vehicle unless you have an exemption in writing issued by the RTA. Application for an exemption can be made at any motor registry upon payment of a fee. See related link to Licensing fees (above right).

A limited exemption from the prohibited vehicle condition may be granted if:

More powerful vehicles are required for genuine employment purposes (the RTA application requires a statutory declaration to be provided by an employer/registered operator).
Eight or more cylinder 4WD vehicles are required by country drivers who have no practical alternative.
The provisional driver can prove direct ownership of a prohibited vehicle prior to the start of the scheme or before an overseas/interstate licence transfer.
The provisional holder is disqualified and can prove direct ownership of their current vehicle at the time of the offence that led to the disqualification.
The principal family vehicle is a moderate performance turbo/supercharged engine vehicle.
Examples of moderate performance turbo/supercharged vehicles that may be eligible for exemption include (but not limited to):

Audi, A4 1.8T Quattro B7 4D Sedan Turbo 4 1781 cc
Mercedes-Benz, C180 Kompressor Avantgarde W203 Upgrade 4D Sedan Supercharged 4 1796 cc
Saab, 9-3 Linear 1.8T MY05 4D Sedan Turbo 4 1988 cc
Volvo, XC90 2.5T Lifestyle Edition 05 Upgrade 4D Wagon Turbo 5 2521 cc
Volkswagon, Passat 1.8T 3B 4D Sedan Turbo 4 1781 cc
An exemption from the passenger restriction will be only granted in exceptional circumstances. You must provide reasons why you have an exceptional circumstance to have your exemption request considered.

Further information on how to apply for a prohibited vehicle or passenger restriction exemption is available on the Application for Exemption Passenger or Prohibited Vehicle Condition (available to download from the box at the bottom of this page).

The driver must notify the RTA within 14 days if their changed circumstances affect their exemption, including if the driver no longer requires being exempted or if the exemption letter needs replacing. A further fee may apply.
SO if you held your P's before July 2005 your safe if not then i guess you have to call your RTA and find out. hope this has been some help.
