In the VW's (Golf anyway) they have one either side of the pedals. The purpose for the one on the right is to have your right foot at the same height as the brake pedal when you have the cruise control on. The natural tendency when having cruise on is to put you right foot under the pedals. Whilst weird initially, it is a good safety feature.
