Default Mates problem

Here is one for you guru's out there. A mate of mine was helping a friend who owns an EF. The problom was that the T bar was loose on the auto trannie. So he pulled the centre console out and replaced all the busches he could find. That all seemed to go well except now the car will only select drive. The T bar will physically go where its supposed to but the car will only go into drive. He is an ex ford mechanic but it has him stumped. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated
