Default fuel gauge, o2 sensor faulty??

Hi all, in the family we have a series 2 au falcon forte petrol, its just hit 62,000kms last month and my mother noticed something weird in it today. She took it for a drive from our place to the shops 5mins away, when she left the fuel gauge showed it was dead on half and he dte was flashing stating their was only 80kms of fuel left. She drove to the shops and back and reached home with the fuel gauge between a quarter and halfway mark from about 12kms of driving MAX, the dte also showd it had 78kms left.
Could this be a faulty o2 sensor, i have never replaced it since new, or could it be the gauge, or the computer just confusing itself (if they can do that).
all help would be great.
cheers
