I just saw the documentary above and it is a real eye opener.
Basically it discusses the situation which is called 'Peak Oil Production'. ie: the point in time when the maximum oil produciton occurs after which it starts to reduce because of dwindling oil reserves. The theory is it will happen in the next couple of decades. With the emerging economies in China, India, etc, the demand for energy is skyrocketing and will continue to grow almost exponentially in the future. There will be a time when the energy needs of the world will no longer be able to be filled (oil is consumed at about 50 billion barrels per day !!!). Alternate energies such as wind, nuclear etc will not be able to supply anywhere near the cheap energy that oil and fossil fuels do. If the 'peak' comes in the next 20 years mankind is in for a real shock and the way in which we are accustomed to living will change VERY, VERY DRAMATICALLY !! If you get the opportunity to check the doco out do it. It's at some theatres but should also be on the web somewhere I imagine. Here's the review from the 'Age'. http://www.theage.com.au/news/film-r...414448790.html |
