A few weeks back, i hired a car for a week whilst working in melbourne and Gipplsand. Hertz upgraded me from an XR6 to a BRAND new Fairlane Ghia.
Lightening Strike - full leather...sweet as. It was strange looking at the odo that had only 143km on it compare to my RTV with 151,000 on it! Anyways, apart from that awesome new Ford smell, it was my first drive of the ZF-6speed. I drove it all over Melbourne and out to Drouin, down to the Island and wow, I felt like going down to Ford and buying one. What a Cruiser. That 6 speed is a treat, and despite its size, i thought it handled well and even with me enjoying the 6Spd, a/c on all the time, it returned 10.2l/100km. Picked up my 7 year old nephew and his (Holden lovin) mate from school. These two little fellas road in the back, their legs barely reaching over the seats, swapping footy cards. The Holden fella pipe up "Hey Jeeves - does this thing move or is it a bucket of bolts"..cheeky little fella soon shut up as i planted it, the I6 pushing them back into the leather as the box jumped form 6th to 2nd and took off towards the non-existent redline. Did the same thing down on the island next to the track...it is such a great crusier. I really enjoyed the 900 off kays- i even tried to see if I could extend the hire and drive it back to Sydney airport at my expense - even told work Id pay for the missed flight, but sadly it wasn't possible. Ive only driven a handfull of Fairlane's but have ridden in many ZLs and NAs. More recently they've all been bloody cabs and thats a sad thing in my book. If i had the $$ I'd buy one and use it as a Sunday cruiser - as i don't have the dosh, its back to looking at a Sunday Crusier XR8 or Bronco...
