Default BIG power steering issues

I think i might be up for a new power steering pump??

I was driving a mate home tonight from work, unfortunatly this entitled a 360 turn with fair bit of the old accelerator. After the "turn" was completed, which is must say i was impressed with, the power steering pump was making a terrible whining noise when turning the wheel either way. I decided to take the car for a bit of a drive to see if it would nut itself out. Around some of the sharper corners to steering wheel started to vibrate. The steering also got a hell of a lot heavier. After about 10 mins of driving the steering started improving, but it never returned to it's original state.

There are 2 things i can think of
1. the power steering fluid was low to start with, doing the donut (somehow ??) forced all remaining fluid into the system leaving none in the pump??

2. I've rooted the pump by doing something stupid?? if so how much for a pump from the wreckers???

What do you guys think???
any help???

Cheers!
