When people start smoking, it's mostly because of either peer group pressure (which is a powerful thing for a young person) or they chose to smoke because it looks cool.

It's only later when it becomes an addiction that people need to smoke for stress and hardship. It becomes an excuse to keep smoking as the smoker has to have a reason to continue to smoke.

I gave up quite easily because I do have a strong will power (a result of 20 years in the Navy) and I wanted to quit. But even now after 4 years I still think that I wouldn't mind a smoke in stressful situations.

I can fully understand people that just can't give up or find it very difficult.
