‘Worst unroadworthy car we've ever seen' - say Bendigo police of an impounded Mad Max style car

IT looks like something from Mad Max, but this road warrior's wheels are unlikely to see the street again.

Police in Bendigo say the Nissan Skyline was the worst example of an unroadworthy car they have seen, with more faults than they could count.

The driver told officers he couldn't resist the temptation to drive his newly purchased car - the best vehicle he had owned, he told them.

When he was pulled over in the suburb of Flora Hill, the car had no lights, wheel nuts were missing and it had no bumper bars.

The indicators were not operating and the tyres were so bald, wire was protruding from the little rubber than was left.

Bendigo Highway Patrol's Acting Sen-Sgt Rosie Rowe said the car could have caused a disaster.

She said the driver, whose licence was suspended, showed a complete disregard for safety of other road users.

"He understood it shouldn't have been on the road,'' Sen-Sgt Rowe said.

The car was impounded and cannot return to the street until its owner gets a roadworthy certificate.

Sen-Sgt Rowe said the enormous cost of making it roadworthy meant the Skyline would probably finish up in a wrecker's yard.

The driver will be charged on summons with driving while suspended and driving an unroadworthy car.

The car was the 700th impounded in Bendigo since anti-hoon laws were introduced in 2006.
