Default 2.0l pinto timing help

Hey guys i have this 2.0l pinto for my MK2 cortina, now its ment to have a aftermarket cam and few other things done to the motor but not 100% sure.
now i cant figer out the timing got crank at TDC cam on its mark, the dizzy was way off its mark so turned the dizzy till it lined up with its mark at lead 1.
now the book says to set ign to 6 degrees BTDC so i did that and wont fire. worked my way up to 16 degrees BTDC now but still wont fire. i know the motor works cos had it started when i first got it but would die after a couple secs was told it was cos the timing is out. also would i need to advance my cam if its aftermarket?
