Default Mondeo Wagon Question

I have a 2012 Mondeo Zetec Wagon.

Is there a reason why the polystyrene blocks underneath the base closer to the back seat have shapes cut out in them? I understand the moulds around the spare tyre area.... Are there things that are meant to fit in there that I haven't got?

Being the hollowness of some of the poly bricks, puts the base out of shape when I put a load on top.

I have had to fill them out with smaller polystyrene blocks to make a more solid base for the board to sit on.

Has anyone else had that problem or can someone explain why all the shapes?

Cheers
