Exclamation Barina RS November

As Drive reported in 2012, the new Barina RS will take on the likes of the Volkswagen Polo GTI, Peugeot 208 GTi, Suzuki Swift Sport, Skoda Fabia RS and Ford’s recently released Fiesta ST.

Pricing and details are yet to be confirmed, but the US version of the Barina hot hatch - the Chevrolet Sonic RS - has a 1.4-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with 103kW and 200Nm.

However, reports out of the US suggest General Motors’ newly developed 1.6-litre turbo engine - which replaced the 1.4-litre in sportier versions of the locally-made Cruze, and produces a more competitive 132kW and 230Nm - will be added to lineup.

The Barina RS will gain sporty additions such as a body kit with larger rear spoiler, 17-inch alloy wheels and an RS-exclusive colour known as Orange Rock.

Holden says the car has undergone local engineering and development work to tune the new model to Australian buyers’ tastes.

The new Holden Barina RS goes on sale in November. We’d expect it to be priced close to the Fiesta ST, at $24,990.
