Smile PINGING in Ford Fiesta

Hi all, I'm new to 4 cylinder cars, and my misses now wants to get into a new fiesta auto, now that her Falcon has been donated to a family member.
Her Falcon has a superb 6 cyl motor which has never missed a beat, burns no oil and has every appearance of going forever.
I have read about all the PINGING problems experienced in those little buzz boxes even using Premium fuel.
I also know they sell heaps of them, so some people must be happy listening to all that pinging.
Would someone who has experienced this problem enlighten me please, is it as bad as it seems when reading the reviews on the subject?
We are interested in buying the Zetec model.
Any advice very welcome.
