The East Coast Nationals has been run and done for 2015, with weather looming in the week leading up to the event, Mother Nature and the Sydney Dragway team got the stars to align and put on a great show for everyone present.
Here are some stand out results and competitors from the weekend. Drag racing veteran John Zappia was not out to play this weekend in his Top Doorslammer HQ Monaro. Running four sub 6 second passes throughout the event, with a best ET of 5.762 @ 249.58 MPH to take out his class; mind bendingly fast! Team Mopar were on a roll (literally) this weekend with unrivalled ET’s in the Pro Stock class driver Lee Bektash piloted his Chrysler Hemi on a number of sub 7 second passes throughout the weekend, setting the fastest time in class with a 6.921 @ 198.06 MPH; though early chute deployment in the final round saw them cross the line in second. Gary Phillips and his Chevrolet Monte Carlo Top Alcohol funny car were looking menacing all weekend thanks to fresh black graphics. The Queenslander looked to be competitive after qualifying third with a 5.523 @ 257.14 MPH. Though trouble in the eliminations did not see Phillip’s pass the first round. Four time ANDRA Top Fuel Championship winner Darren Morgan was in our sights all weekend, with results like that under his belt we knew the AEG power tools drag racer was no slouch. Unfortunately it was not to be this weekend, the Mildura based team finishing in second with a fastest ET of 4.675 @ 317.87 MPH. The top fuel Motorcycles were a highly competitive class this weekend, Chris Porter and his nitro Harley sitting at the pointy end of the competition throughout. Qualifying in second with his fastest time of, 7.086 @ 167.18 MPH, then cruising through the eliminations to the finals, though unable to pass mark drew for the win; taking home a respectable second.
